A 20-year-old food factory apprentice found dead in woodland has been remembered as a “bright and capable young man”.

Sam Smythson was last seen in South Ashford at about 6pm on Monday evening, sparking a helicopter search.

But about 12 hours later, the body of the former John Wallis Academy pupil was found in Kingsnorth Woods.

Mr Smythson, who was last spotted in the Bond Road area on Monday, had worked at the Premier Foods factory in Kennington Road since 2017.

In a statement, the long-running firm said it is “incredibly saddened by the loss of Sam”.

“He was a bright and capable young man who was a highly valued member of our team,” a spokeswoman said.

“Our thoughts are with his family and we are doing everything we can to support them and his colleagues at this difficult time.”

John Wallis academy principal John McParland paid tribute to a “lovely, lovely boy”.

He said: “I am devastated to hear the tragic news of the untimely death of Sam, one of our former students.

“Sam studied here for six years, leaving in 2017 with the intention of finding employment or an apprenticeship after successfully completing a one-year Level 3 course in plumbing and BTEC in sport.

“Staff and I remember Sam as a very conscientious student, someone who was very polite, respectful and well mannered.

“Sam had a very close group of friends and was very popular amongst peers and staff alike.

“Staff who I have spoken with are shocked and saddened to hear the terribly sad news.

“We will keep Sam, his family and friends in our prayers at this time. May Sam rest in peace.”

Police say Mr Smythson’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
