Wilson opens new pitch
Three-time Olympian Jen Wilson opened Ashford Hockey Club’s new astroturf pitch on Saturday.
The ex-South Africa international, who’s just completed a three-year spell as the head coach of Scotland women, cut the ribbon in front of more than 200 members and guests.
She was back on familiar territory as a former long-time coach of Ashford men’s 1sts.
The morning started with a seven-a-side mixed tournament with over 80 players enjoying the chance to play hockey after so many months.
Guests, including deputy mayor Jenny Webb and Cllr Matthew Forrest, arrived throughout the morning and after much reminiscing and lunch, the pitch was finally opened by Wilson after a delay of more than a year.
There was an exhibition match in the afternoon with an Ashford All Stars Mixed XI pitted against a visiting All Stars Mixed XI which included three England Masters.
It was fast and furious, with a demonstration of superb skill throughout.
The visitors won 6-3 thanks to Rob Playford’s hat-trick, Kev Miller (2) and Ed Butcher, while Sophie Hunt (2) and Robin Miller scored for the hosts.
The previous weekend, three members of the club represented England in a Masters Home International Tournament in Nottingham.
Old stagers Miller and Paul Congerton represented the over50s and over-55s, while Playford made his debut for the over-40s.
All three age groups enjoyed a clean sweep against Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
