Will it be MIB or WIB?

- with Mike Shaw

Since Men In Black 3 was released in 2012 and didn’t completely nosedive, there have been sporadic talks about a fourth part to the franchise.

The last proper news centred on a proposed crossover between Men In Black and the Jump Street series (another Sony property). In that film, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were expected to play new MIB recruits and get up to all kinds of shenanigans. That plan has now been pushed aside in favour of a fourth film that will focus on totally new characters.

Rather than being called Men In Black 4, the new film will be pitched as a spin-off of the main series and so will carry a different title. Sony says the film will hit cinemas in May 2019, and will be written by the same guys who wrote Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

This new movie will have more of a “global” outlook than the previous films, and is intended to reboot the franchise in a similar way that Jurassic World did for the Jurassic Park franchise.

However, Sony has made a reputation for itself of spoiling popular franchises, and there’s already talk that this new film will be a victim of their gender swap policy – because that worked so well with Ghostbusters.

No matter who the new leads are though, it’s highly likely that the original stars – Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones – will make cameo appearances.
