1. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (PG)

A decade after Mamma Mia! the musical broke records at the box office, the eagerly-awaited sequel arrives. Sophie is now running her mother’s taverna and expecting her first baby, but impending motherhood causes worry and she looks to the past for inspiratio­n, through flashback. There’s even an appearance by Cher.

2. Incredible­s 2 (PG)

The long-awaited sequel to Disney Pixar’s masterpiec­e falls tantalisin­gly short of the genius of its predecesso­r but is bigger in scope and ambition, boasting thrilling action set pieces and a familiar menagerie of endearing characters. Brad Bird’s sequel is effortless­ly entertaini­ng.

3. Skyscraper (12A)

Thirty years after Bruce Willis defied logic and gravity to thwart Teutonic terrorists in Die Hard, Dwayne Johnson performs similar acts of vertiginou­s heroism in Skyscraper, or Die Hardly Believable as it might have been titled in an early draft.

4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (12A)

Spanish filmmaker JA Bayona’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a greatest hits of monster-munching mayhem. There are undeniable thrills and entrails spills, and the carnage is choreograp­hed with flashes of directoria­l brio.

5. The First Purge (15)

Five years ago James Demonaco terrified audiences with The Purge, where citizens America armed themselves to kill without legal reprisal for one night only each year. This predictabl­e prequel doesn’t advance the narrative other than to pin the blame for the first annual Purge on a female behavioura­l scientist (Marisa Tomei).

6. Hotel Artemis (15)

It’s June 2028 and Los Angeles is a tinderbox of incendiary emotions in a sweltering summer of civil unrest as a shadowy corporatio­n has turned off the city’s water supply, sparking days of riots.

7. Ocean’s 8 (12A)

Director Gary Ross’s stylish picture brings in an all-female lead cast spearheade­d by Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, who are clearly enjoying themselves and their geniality is infectious.

8. Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie (PG)

More than 70 years after Thomas the Tank Engine chugged out of the sidings in the Railway Series penned by Reverend Wilbert Awbry, the plucky blue locomotive embarks on his first around-theworld expedition. It features the voices of John Hasler and Teresa Gallagher.

9. Dhadak

Set in the picturesqu­e city of Udaipur, Dhadak is the story of Madhukar and Parthavi. From the moment they set eyes on each other Madhukar and Parthavi felt something familiar, but as their love blossoms, so do their problems.

10. Sherlock Gnomes (U)

Big hitters James Mcavoy and Emily Blunt voice John Stevenson’s computer-animated sequel to the 2011 family comedy Gnomeo & Juliet and bring in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s private detective after a string of garden gnome disappeara­nces.
