Legend Jonny impressed by squad’s touch of class
Touch rugby
Canterbury Cougar Cubs touch team travelled to Bath to compete in round two of the O2 Touch Tour on Saturday after winning the Loughborough tournament the previous week.
The three Payton sisters – Danni, Ayla and Erin – were joined by four Meredith brothers and aspiring South East England u-18 players Rory Howard, Dan Eaglestone and Dan Mayall at the event hosted by Vernon Kay.
Competition proved much s t i f fer than Loughborough as their f irst game against Maidenhead Mohawks resulted in a four all draw.
A second draw and win resulted in them scraping 16th position to be drawn against the winners of the pool stages, the Space Invaders, who had an impressive 22 points difference.
The game finished three tries all and needed a drop off where three players from each team left the pitch leaving three to compete. Vaughn and Stuart Meredith partnered Dani Payton to start the game.
Dave Meredith and Dan Mayall then subbed for the Meredith brothers and Dave gave Dani Payton the chance to score a well worked try in the corner for the win.
The next rounds proved much easier than the pool games to see the Cubs up against the Maidenhead Mohawks again.
Current England player, Jonathan Joseph, joined the Cubs for a warm-up session and gave them the benefit of his advice on playing international rugby.
Good work from both teams resulted in three tries each. In the dying minutes of the game, the Mohawks managed to score a well-worked try in the corner for the win.
The pl aye r s got the chance to meet Jonny Wilkinson who congratulated both teams on a great day.
