Field day as Castle make cup progress

Tim Field hit a half-century as holders Castle B reached the third round of the Canterbury & District Bat and Trap League’s Charles Skam Cup. The Castle edged out Artichoke B 2-1, led by Field who hit 53 runs. Team-mate Dale Mewitt took four traps, while the Artichoke had three players who hit the spot three times – Norman Gage, Ian Rauch and Steve Brown. Evenhill Crusaders beat Red Lion B 2-0, while Littlebour­ne Rec went down 2-1 at home to Alma A. Three traps apiece from Harry Stow and Oliver Stone helped Red Lion C win 2-1 against Dove Inn B, despite good performanc­es from Alan Digby (four traps) and Luke Digby (three traps). Compasses secured a 2-1 home victory over Catholic Club and Artichoke A also moved into the third round courtesy of a 2-1 success at Castle A. Gentil Knyght C won 2-0 at home to Huntsman & Horn, despite B Harding hitting 31 runs and teammate L Bosley taking four traps. Charles Skam Plate holders Gentil Knyght B won 2-0 at Shatterlin­g’s Frog & Orange in the preliminar­y round with Lee Coombes rattling up 40 of the Knyght’s 120 runs in the first leg. Not to be outdone, prolific batsman Keith Stout hit 54 of the Frog’s 88 runs in reply. Two Brewers won 2-1 at Share & Coulter, while Red Lion A won 2-0 at home to Herne Bay FC. Smugglers B and Alma B also progressed to the first round as a result of walkovers.

Pam Watson scored 36 runs and Daphne King 34 as the Catholic Club beat King’s Head B 2-1 in the opening round of the ladies’ Cackett Cup. Golden Oldies beat Golden Lion ladies 2-0 with Mary Bligh taking three traps for the winners. Kath Neale scored 42 runs in the first leg to help Red Lion A beat Gentil Knyght 2-1 despite Jill Elderton taking an impressive five traps for the losers and Sarah Vincent another three. Market Inn beat Castle B 2-0 and Haywain had a comfortabl­e 2-0 win at Ye Olde Beverlie.
