Clean sweep secures progress

TUNBRIDGE WELLS ARE CRUSHED IN NATIONAL TOP CLUB COMPETITIO­N BEFORE MORE SUCCESS FOLLOWS IN THE ANNAND SHIELD Canterbury

Canterbury enjoyed an impressive 5-0 victory over Tunbridge Wells in the National Top Club competitio­n.

Mick Fisher won his two-wood singles 17-9, with Alan Cornfoot taking the singles 21-17.

Peter Foster and Steve Wells triumphed in the pairs 22-14, while Tony Dobson, Mike Talbot and Jeff Vane won the triples 21-15, and Dave Rickard, Chris Dawson, Colin Strouts and Malcolm Nicholson the fours 20-11.

Canterbury also progressed in the National Tony Allcock over60 two-fours, pipping Borstal in a tense last few ends by four shots.

Sue Close, Sally and Roger Blissett and Malcolm Nicholson won 28-8 to offset a 25-9 defeat for Liz Long, Carole Nelson, Dave Swann and Ian Burton.

More success came in the Annand Shield as Canterbury edged out New Romney 39-36. Herne Bay’s A team won their Cox Cup preliminar­y- round fixture against Hythe, with the away rink of Roy Chillingwo­rth, Mike Ward, Tony Rowson and Alf Collar winning 19-15 and the home rink of David Knight, Stuart Emert, John Melford and Jim Watson winning 24-14.

Bay will now play Sellindge in the first round.

Bay had a disappoint­ing night at home to Canterbury in the Forest of Blean league, winning only one triple through Andrew Godsell, Bob Baldwin and Scott Whiting (18-11).

Bay did, however, collect six of the eight points in their East Kent mixed triples league match at Ashford Town, winning by 14 shots.

Lyn Phillips, Ray Chipperfie­ld and Bill Robb won 28-9.

Bay won two of the six triples played in a mixed match at Thanet, losing by 10 shots overall.

In the home games against Swanley, the men won on all four rinks played and by 50 shots and the ladies won three of the four triples played, winning by 36 shots.

Ann Cousins, Dennis Hawkins and Neville Taylor drew 18-all.

Grays Town sent six mixed triples to the Castle green, where the two clubs each won on three rinks but the visitors did better overall and won 109-96. Six mixed triples travelled to Chislet in another round of the Catherine Wheeler League, where they won three rinks and lost three but won overall 134-108 to pick up 11 league points to six.
