Hospital cyclists enjoy epic ride to Manchester

-

Surgeons and staff from Kent and Canterbury Hospital donned Lycra for a 220-mile charity bike ride from London to Manchester.

Ben Eddy, Ulrich Kratzer, Milan Thomas and Dan Marsh saddled up for the three-day Bike2BAUS cycling event to raise money for the Urology Foundation.

Hospital staff were joined on the challenge by 11 other cyclists aged from 27 to 63.

Event organiser Mr Eddy, a consultant urologist at the hospital, said: “The first day was incredibly wet, but we just had to get through it.

“We had a great van driver Neil Brown, who followed us the whole way handing out drinks.

“He is ex-army and very regimented so was in charge of keeping morale up.

“We all did a few months worth of training out on the bike to prepare.”

Cyclists took to the road at the British Association of Urological Surgeons HQ at the Royal College of Surgeons in London on June 13. The route passed though Milton Keynes, Rugby, Birmingham and Stoke, before crossing the finishing line at the BAUS annual conference in Manchester on June 15.

A couple of punctures and a broken pedal were the only problems encountered on the way.

Mr Eddy said: “We had a great reception at the end from people on the committee and celebrated our success with a bottle of champagne.”

More than £25,000 was raised by volunteers for the charity.

Money raised will be used to support the training of surgeons and operating theatre teams in robotic-assisted surgery.
