Titheridge’s top tench haul

Coarse angling IMPRESSIVE CATCH SECURES VICTORY IN ALL-NIGHT EVENT

- By Paul Mercer

The Canterbury and District Angling Association has held the first of their two competitions of the 2015/2016 season.

The all-night Baldwin Cup for carp and tench was won by Ellis Titheridge with an impressive 46lb of tench.

The best of Titheridge’s haul was a 6lb 8oz fish taken from the top end of Trenley Lake.

Stuart White opted for carp and fished at Fordwich Lake for a mirror of 21lb 14oz and second place.

Forty two anglers fished the match including four juniors but none of the youngsters weighed in.

The following two placed anglers also fished for carp at Fordwich and Darren Offen hooked a 11lb 10oz common carp for third and Ady Minter another common of 11lb 1oz for fourth.

The Goldsmith Cup for junior anglers was fished at Trenley Lake north bank on Sunday.

The wet weather that cooled the air temperature that morning did thankfully lessen for the weigh-in when Charlotte Bacchus tipped her keep-net out for a match-winning total of 10lb 8oz.

Charlotte landed all her small fish with the aid of a pole.

Lucy Johnson used the same approach to catch 7lb 4oz of more small fish for second, although Lucy did weigh in a fine 1lb 2oz rudd to boost her tally.

Pole fishing gave Hannah Boden third with 4lb 13oz, again small fish, while fourth-placed Alfie Richards landed 3lb 7oz that included two skimmer bream of about a 1lb each and the remainder small fish caught on a pole.

Fishing with a sliding-float, Grace Wild hooked 1lb 1oz for fifth that included a splendid 12oz roach. Match organiser Brian Mankelow thanked Dan West of Blean Angling for his donation of prizes for the juniors.

Away from the competitions, the hot weather has slowed catches at the Fordwich lakes with only a few bites to be had.

Early morning and late evening has proved most successful additionally with a respite from the sunshine and high temperatures.

Despite the conditions, Martin Daily hooked a common carp of 37lb 12oz and ever-successful junior CDAA members Hannah Boden a fine 1lb 4oz perch and Henry Weir a weighty bream of 5lb.

In addition to Fordwich Lake, the north bank of Trenley Lake with its deeper water remains a good option.

CDAA bailiff Jon Weir skilfully fished to land 31 bream that included fish to 8lb 10oz and three tench to 6lb 4oz, in a most memorable session at Stour Lake.

Grove Lake has also been fishing well with Alan Caine landing 27lb 8oz of silver fish ahead of I. Peet with 25lb 5oz and T. Libby 22lb 8oz when they fished a local match.

A few days before the Stonar Charity Shield (details below), anglers will be encouraged to know that the Sandwich stillwater is fishing well with many 20lb-plus carp coming readily to the net.

Several smaller carp have been landed as have bream, rudd, roach and eels.

Joseph and Terry Willis shared nine carp to 22lb 12oz while Scott Golesworthy banked eight carp to 10lb, nine ‘mid-doubles’ and a great common of 23lb 15oz in a remarkable stint at Stonar.

Ten bream to 7lb were taken by Les Lennell and a small bream for Ian McDonald accompanied eight rudd to 2lb 3oz.

Terry Marshall also bagged up with some fine rudd that included fish of 2lb 5oz.

Stonar bailiff Jock White reeled in 12 bream to 7lb, four carp including a mirror of 16lb 12oz and a massive eel of 4lb 8oz.

A reminder that the Stonar Charity Shield will be fished from ( tomorrow) Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, at Stonar Lake.

This competition is open to local/non-local, members and non members of the CDAA and this year’s donations are in aid of the ‘Caring for Connor’ charity.

Anglers should meet at Jock’s shed at 4pm for the draw with fishing until 10am on Sunday. The largest fish over the weekend wins the match.
