Win proves canny Phil is no joker

Members of Greenhill Sea Angling Club took to the county’s beaches on Saturday to take part in the Kent coast roamer fishing competitio­n, for the Joker’s Cup. The winner with two dogfish weighing 1008 grams was Phil Shilling while second place went to Daniel Wall who also caught two fish, a mackerel weighing 262 grams and a gogfish weighing 628 grams. Wall’s dogfish was the heaviest fish caught and helped contribute to a weight of 890 grams. Third was Raymond Phillips who caught a dogfish weighing 610 grams. Top junior angler was Ryan Wall whose two pouting came in at 192 grams. Nine anglers fished the competitio­n but only five weighed in fish. The majority of anglers fished at Deal. Greenhill Sea Angling Club had previously held a competitio­n on the Prince of Wales Pier at Dover, fishing for the Admiralty Pier Cup. Ten members took part, including two juniors and the winner was Raymond Phillips who caught 19 fish, consisting of bass, dogfish and dabs. The combined weight of fish he caught was 9,872 grams and the bass was the heaviest fish of the competitio­n, weighing 1,270 grams. Second place went to Darren Kennedy who caught two dogfish which weighed 1502 grams. In third was Dan Hall with one dogfish which weighed 604 grams. Catches were thin on the ground and only four anglers weighed in fish. The club’s next competitio­n is on Satuday, July 25 and will take place on the beaches of Deal.
