Kelly holds nerve to triumph

Herne Bay

Herne Bay’s Terry Kelly staged a fine comeback to pip Canterbury’s Mick Fisher 21-20 in the County Divisional (badged) singles final.

The situation looked bleak for Kelly as he trailed 20-17 but picking up a three to go 20-20, he then kept his nerve and played a good final end to win the match.

He has now attained his Kent County badge and will play in the Kent County quarter-final at West Wickham BC on Tuesday, July 14.

Another Bay member to win his County badge was Brian Dennis who, along with Dave Mason, Scott Whiting and Ian Robb, won the County Divisional final of the Fours against a quartet from Kearsney, 26-13.

They now play in the Kent County quarter- f inal at Aylesham BC next Friday (July 17).

Mason and Robb also won the County Divisional final of the pairs.

Last year’s county finalists beat a pair from Canterbury 26-11 and now play in the quarter-final at Hesketh Park on Wednesday.

Bay picked up six of the eight points in the Forest of Blean league match at home to Whitstable, winning by 36 shots.

Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bob Day and Bill Robb had a fine 28- 9 win.

The Trophy match at Canterbury was restricted to 14 ends due to the severe heat, with Canterbury running out winners by three shots.

Bay won four of the five mixed triples against Dane Park, winning by 12 shots overall.

Best winning triple was Sam Hardy, Sylvia Sweeting and Jim Watson (21-5).

The ladies also had their match at Canterbury restricted by the heat, going down by 16 shots. Canterbury

Jeff Vane and Peter Foster are through to County finals after winning the Divisional final.

Mick Fisher, however, experience­d disappoint­ment on three counts.

In addition to losing narrowly to Herne Bay’s Terry Kelly in the singles, he was beaten in the pairs, in combinatio­n with Chris Dawson and in the triples, partnered by Alan Cornfoot and Steve Wells.

Yvonne Gambrill lost in the Maude Wood Singles but there was joy for the ladies’ triple of Sandra Swann, Liz Long and Barbara White, who are through to the semi-final of the County Benevolent competitio­n at Dartford.

Canterbury Ladies suffered two defeats, going down 37-27 to St Margaret’s in the Dover League and 42-23 to Tilmanston­e. Whitstable lost on all six rinks to go down 109-82 against Ashford Town in the Forest of Blean League. Boughton took three points from their Forest of Blean League match at home to Charing, who went away with five after a 110-80 success.

Oyster IBC

The Oyster IBC were in dominant form at home to White Oak, Swanley, winning all eight rinks on the way to a 202-106 success.
