ROLLER HOCKEY: DOUBLE CLEAN SWEEP AT TOURNAMENTS

-

Herne Bay’s junior section enjoyed a weekend double clean sweep with tournament wins for the under-15s in Peterborough on Saturday and the under-17s at Herne Bay Arena the following day. The under-15s travelled north looking to continue their unbeaten start to the Eastern Counties season and faced Rickmansworth, Letchworth and Peterborough. Bay were 1-0 ahead against Rickmansworth in the first half but added six further goals after the break to run out 7-0 winners. The next game was a routine 4-0 win over Letchworth and Bay then rounded things off with a 17-1 victory over a young Peterborough team. Bay have nine wins from nine in the league and are well positioned with two tournaments remaining. Bay’s first home SECRHA under-17s tournament was on Sunday and they began strongly with a 4-1 victory over Invicta. Their other game was a feisty encounter with local rivals HBU who had taken the honours when the teams met earlier in the season. This time Bay were not to be denied and their young team ran in nine goals with just one reply. Bay’s two keepers conceded just three goals across more than two hours of play, Bailey Smith and Lucas Crow giving the outfield players confidence to play an expansive game. Bay: Read-jones, Langford, Hopper, Rawlinson, Ing, Hudson, Crow, Albon. Three boys from Herne Bay are set to fly to Porto, Portugal, to represent their country. Herne Bay High pupils Joe Chipperfield, 11 and Eden Emery-webber, 12 and Herne Juniors’ Owen Freeman, 10), who train with Herne Bay RHC three times a week, were selected to play for England Vision 2020 over the Easter holiday. Vision 2020 are a team that have been put together to enable the boys to compete in the European Championship in 2020. Chipperfield, who turns 12 while in Portugal, said: “It is such an achievement to be playing for our country. “I have been playing with Herne Bay since I was five and it is down to the commitment and dedication of Herne Bay’s coaches, managers and team members that have got me to this stage.” Emery-webber has trained with a Portuguese team several times and said: “The Portuguese are tough, energetic players but we have a great team who play and train well together, I’m sure there will be a few good games and hopefully a lot of goals scored.” Freeman added: “I am looking forward to going to Portugal, it is a great experience and I’m sure that we will make lots of friends with the Portuguese players – but only off the rink.” Herne Bay RHC train at Herne Bay Arena on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
