Skipper wants a final flourish

-

Captain Martyn Beaumont says Canterbury want to finish the National 2 South season on a high in memory of late chairman Jonathan Marsh.

Mr Marsh died suddenly last week, just three days after seeing his side suffer a 71-17 hammering at title-chasing Old Albanians – their fifth defeat in six games.

The fourth-bottom city club had a scheduled weekend off ahead of Saturday’s crunch relegation clash with third-bottom Dorking at the Marine Travel Ground, Merton Lane (3pm), although it has been overshadowed by the sudden death of Mr Marsh.

Beaumont admitted: “It came as a big shock to everyone.

“We all want to do everything we can to finish this season on a high for him. We’ll be having a tribute to him at our pre-match meal and a minute’s standing ovation before the game itself.”

He added: “What’s gone on will probably add some edge to the day but we all know how big this game is. Even though we’ve tried to play it down, it is massive for both clubs and we are focused.”

A big win could put a nine-point gap between Canterbury and the Surrey side with five games remaining and ignite hopes of a late assault on a top-eight finish.

Meanwhile, the club’s director of senior rugby Giles Hilton has been installed as acting chairman at Merton Lane.

Mr Hilton was chairman for 11 years before being succeeded by Mr Marsh. Mick O’reilly will continue as vice-chairman.

A club statement said: “The rationale behind this decision was that Giles has extensive experience of running the club and we need a steady pair of hands at the helm to guide us through the next few months.

“It goes without saying that Jonathan had an immense positive impact on the club and it was a real pleasure to have known him.

“I wish to reassure you that Mick and all the committee members will give Giles their full support over the coming months and he has our thanks for stepping into this role at a difficult time for the club.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Jonathan’s family.”
