Man shot in police siege charged with attempted murder of his daughter
A man shot by police during an incident at a house in Hersden last year has been charged with the attempted murder of his daughter.
Marc Traylor has been in hospital since the night of February 8, 2015, when armed police surrounded the home in The Avenue.
The 41-year-old was shot by officers in a tense siege in which his 16-year-old daughter suffered life-threatening stab wounds.
Traylor, who was left in a coma, remains bedridden in a London hospital more than a year on and is expected to need lifelong medical care after he was shot in the head and body.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigates every incident in which police discharge firearms.
Its report is now not likely to be published until criminal proceedings against Traylor are over.
Traylor’s eldest daughter, who was injured during the incident, has fully recovered.
But his wife Nicole told the Kentish Gazette that the situation was weighing heavily upon the family.
Speaking last month, she said she regularly visited her husband in hospital.
“The family are struggling with the situation but are trying to get on with our lives,” Nicole said. “Marc is always in our thoughts and hearts.”
Armed officers and trained negotiators were called to the family’s semi-detached home at about 11pm following concerns for the teenage girl.
Emergency crews remained on standby and a helicopter hovered overhead. At about 1am witnesses heard shots ring out and Mr Traylor was critically injured.
It subsequently emerged that four weapons were fired by police during the stand-off.
Officers used two Tasers and a rubber-baton launcher before Mr Traylor was shot with a police-issue handgun.
Firearms officers involved were interviewed and treated as “significant witnesses”.
The IPCC confirmed the four weapons used had been taken away for testing.
Traylor is due to appear via videolink at Medway Magistrates’ Court via a video link on Monday, April 11.
