Parry remains unbeaten

Canterbury boxer Neil Parry made it three wins from three in the professional ranks despite a disrupted preparation to his latest bout at Bethnal Green.

The 22-year-old welterweight returned to York Hall – the scene of previous wins against Duane Grimes and Alec Bazza late last year – intending to face journeyman Birmingham pro Jason Nesbitt only for the veteran to pull-out at 11.30am on the morning of the fight.

Promoters managed to line-up Cornish fighter Jack Green as a late replacement but despite the disruption, Parry saw off his older opponent with ease to add another points decision to his CV.

Parry said: “It nearly didn’t happen. Jason pulled out because of a bad rib he had from the week before, so I have no idea why I didn’t hear any earlier but they managed to find another opponent.

“All I was told was his age, he was orthodox and had only had one previous fight.

“I didn’t know what to expect when the fight started so I wanted to be clever and took it slow in the first round, seeing what he had.

“Before long I started coming in behind my jab. I felt smooth, I was not getting caught and clearly won the first round.

“I upped it in the second round and nearly ended it in the third and fourth. I applied pressure and went for him towards the end of the fourth but he managed to see out the final 10 seconds to the bell.”

Parry added: “I felt good. I feel like I could have done six or even eight rounds. Hopefully, next time, I can get at least six rounds.

“This fight was more of a crowd- pleaser than the one against Jason would have been anyway. Jason is an experienced fighter and he’d have just been in there to survive whereas Jack came and wanted to win.”

Parry returned to the gym just five days after the fight and is already planning his build-up to his next bout, scheduled foryork Hall on July 16.
