Bowls England president Michael Jennings visited Canterbury BC last Wednesday to celebrate the 50th anniversar­y of the club’s ladies’ section.

Mr Jennings was joined by 40 players representi­ng the England team, including senior vice-president Viv Tomlinson from Lancashire, junior vice-president Bill Smith, of Leicesters­hire, and past president Marciano Dunstone, of Hertfordsh­ire.

Also playing were Rosemary EllmanBrow­n, of Sussex; Denis Cousins, of Norfolk and past England presidents Wayne Manley and Arthur Hockley.

In all, 19 different counties were represente­d.

The team was welcomed by Joy Burton, Canterbury’s president.

A game was played on 10 rinks with the city club winning on just three and losing by 33 shots overall. Canterbury 167 Bowls England 200 Jo Vandapeer, June Mitchell, Ros Cheesman, Chris Dawson won 2412; Jill Jenkins, Sue Trott, Mervyn Gulvin, Karin Walker won 20-16; Junko Lord, Maureen Aitkin, Russell Feast, Carole Nelson won 19-13; Carole Rickard, Sandra Swann, Keith Brooks, David Charlton lost 21-19; Bob Keen, Wyn Brooks, Barbara Grundy, Sue Close lost 16-15; Ian Mitchell, Joy Burton, Madelaine Mcconomy, Ian Burton lost 29-15; Sheila Holden, Jean Bourner, June Baker, Michael Hutchinson lost 20-11; David Jenkins, Pat Vaughan, Jennie Wilkinson, Marion Patmore lost 29-11; Paul Drury, Val Lundin, Christiann­e Deweduwe, Yvonne Gambrill lost 24-17; Brian Wheeler, Rosemary Wheeler, Maureen Dilnot, Heather Goldsack lost 20-16. Canterbury ladies suffered a 35-shot defeat at Lenham. Lenham 119 Canterbury Ladies 84 Christiane De Weduwe, June Baker, Sue Close won 26-12; Liz Long, Sandra Swann, Carole Nelson lost 19-16; Dave Rickard, Stan Supple, Dick Mortley lost 16-14; Darren Ellis, George Long, Dave Charlton lost 27-10; Jo Vandapeer, Dave Swann, Mike Hutchinson lost 26-8; Keith Wright, Roger Gowan, Mervyn Gulvin lost 21-10.

The ladies also lost a tight game with Aylesham by three shots. Canterbury 53 Aylesham 56 June Mitchell, Joy Burton, June Baker won 20-16; Angela Hudson, Gale Hone, S.king drew 16-16; Brian Wheeler, Barbara Grundy, June Strouts lost 24-17.

The city club split the four rinks against Sellindge but won by 13 shots overall. Canterbury 69 Sellindge 56 Ian Mitchell, Trevor Dilworth, Bernard Woodhams won 21-9; K. Sampson, G.francis, David Charlton won 23-9; Peter Needham, Roger Gowan, C,mervyn Gulvin lost 17-14; Duncan Ellis, George Long, David Swann lost 21-11.

In the East Kent Mixed Triples League, Canterbury lost to Birchingto­n by 42 shots and claimed just three points. Canterbury 87 Birchingto­n 129 Bob Keen, Pauline Darling, Colin Goldsack won 16-14; Brian Wheeler, Carole Nelson, Bernard Woodhams lost 27-9; Jane Carey-harris, David Rickard, Colin Strouts won 25-16; Tim Woods, Madelaine Mcconomy, Mervyn Gulvin won 19-15; Heather Goldsack, David Swain, Chris Dawson lost 36-10; June Strouts, Tom Nelson, Ian Burton lost 17-12.

Canterbury’s bad week continued as they won just one rink against Folkestone Park, losing by 46 shots overall. Canterbury 64 Folkestone Park 110 M. Jagger, Bob Keen, Colin Strouts won 17-16; D. Longley, David Charlton, David Todd lost 19-11; Peter Needham, Russell Feast,
