Tucker just edges cup holder

Whitstable and Seasalter GC began their annual Golf Week on Saturday with the Centenary Cup competitio­n, contested by more than 80 members from all sections.

Ideal conditions resulted in some low scores. The winner, from the junior section, was Jack Tucker, with an excellent score of net 60 playing off 12.

Last year’s winner, 17-handicappe­r Neil Hazel, was a shot back in second with Andy Selwood (h10) in third with a net 62, just ahead of Richard Smith, also playing off 10.

On Sunday, a fourball betterball competitio­n took place and the winners of the ladies’ competitio­n were Cath Whitehead (h26) and Mary King (h21) with 35 points, the men’s competitio­n was won by Paul Guilfoyle (h11) and Glenn Snook (h15) with 42 points.

On Monday, the flag medal took place, with the ladies’ competitio­n being won by Tucker (h14) with a net 71 and the men’s won by Chris Wright (h11) with a net 60, beating club president John Clarke (h11) by two shots. David Bowman (h21) was third on countback.

The ladies’ Medal Winners Cup was played on Sunday afternoon involving all those who had won a monthly medal in the previous year.

Louise Tucker recorded the best net score on the day of 70 to beat Penny Perkins by a shot with Maz Garlinge third on 73. Tucker was awarded the silver cup which was first donated by Penny’s mother, Vera Child, in 1972.

The Spring meeting saw a medal in the morning where Perkins got her revenge by beating Tucker and Jackie Witten on countback, all on net 73, to take first place.

Janet Henley got the best front nine prize with a net 37 and Vilma Parrett the best back nine with 35.

A Texas Scramble in the afternoon was won by Linda Bawden, Mel Bashford and Madge Harris on 34.3, closely followed by Cath Whitehead, Sheila Wyles and Sally Lawson on 35.

More than 20 ladies played in the annual nine-hole White Elephant competitio­n, Bashford emerging victorious winning on countback from Bawden, both with 16 points. Leading scores: 70.5 J Iddenden & M Bidwell (h3.5); 71 T O’reilly & K Elliott (h10); 71.5 D Elliott & T Wenham (h7.5); 72 S Eeles & T Stannard (h12); 73 R Balcombe & K Small (h15), A Brockman & J Brockman (h12); 73.5 D Danton & J Coupe (h1.5); 74.5 A Wigg & J Wigg (h8.5); 75 A Kirkland & K West (h19), P Blake & S Plews (h11); 75.5 D Pilbeam & M Pilbeam (h7.5), A Bundock & I Munday (h9.5); 76 L Johnson & P R Johnson (h3), S Leggatt & K Williamson (h8). trophy donated to the club by founder members John and Betty Martin.

This year the defending champions Liz Harrison (h16) and Steve Mummery (h11) were pushed into second place by Sue Shepherd (h17) and Tony Arscott (h9) with a fantastic net 66.

The runners-up came in with a net 73.5 and third place went to Vic and Sylvia Beecham (both h12) with a net 74.

The trophy was presented by club captain Mark Broadhurst and the lady captain, Gillian Matthews.

Gill Palin, Maz Greenin and Mary Mallion from Westgate & Birchingto­n teamed up to win the Ladies Open Texas Scramble.

The trio carded a net 64 to win on countback from Chestfield GC’S Lesley Witkowski, Patsy Haynes and Finola Paul.

Third place was fought out by four teams all on a net 66 but after countback, the place went to the Boughton & Canterbury team of Di Plommer, Jane Bray and Jen Rutherford.

The nearest the pin prize on the second hole was won by Paul, while Jane Howland from Westgate & Birchingto­n took the prize on the 17th.

The straightes­t drive on the 16th was won by Linda Emmerton from Bexleyheat­h GC.

Eighteen teams took part and a raffle raised £ 300 for the Martha’s Trust charity.
