City side make sure of second spot

-

Canterbury City FC Disability rose to the occasion in the final round of the Kent Disability Football League tournament.

City went into the day with a one-point lead over Milton & Fulston Spiders in the race for second place behind Charlton.

City started the day against their nearest rivals.

The game began cautiously but several attacks ensued and both defences were saved by the woodwork.

The only goal arrived four minutes from time when a free-kick just outside the City area was blocked, although the ball broke to a Spiders striker to fire home and take his side two points ahead of the city club.

A hard-fought goalless draw against champions Charlton followed, with Chris Wright in the City goal making several saves, as did his opposite number.

An end-to-end game against Maidstone in the third game saw Nathan Russell forced off after a heavy challenge, only for the City man to return and break the deadlock with a superb solo goal, dribbling past several opponents before firing into the top corner.

Russell added a second soon after when he slotted in after a good run and cross from the right from Matt Roberts.

Spiders finished their programme with a seven-point haul from their four games on the day, meaning a win for City in their final game against Bromley Green would be good enough for second.

Solid defending by Josh Russell and Chris Taylor kept Green at bay early on, while Roberts saw a shot well saved at the other end.

The opener arrived when Paul Bowmen stopped a Green attack and found Russell to find the top corner and it was 2- 0 when Roberts fired home a 20-yard free-kick.

Defender Chris Taylor drew a fine save after a solo run and then saw a third goal from the resultant corner disallowed. City: Chris Wright, Chris Taylor, Paul Bowman, Josh Russell, Nathan Russell, Matt Roberts, Matthew Biggs. Mark Bowman, Tiffany Walsh
