BOWLS ROUND-UP: bay ease into third round of national top club

In the National Top Club competitio­n Herne Bay’s men progressed to the third round with a 4-1 win over Deal.

Bay won the 2 wood singles, singles, triples and fours, their only loss coming in the pairs.

Bay now play at home to Canterbury in the next round.

In the East Kent Mixed Triples League Bay won five of the six triples played against Canterbury to take seven of the eight available points. Herne Bay 124 Canterbury 86 Ted Milton, Eunice Holder, Bob Simcock won 17-12; Colin Tobutt, Jan Remmington, Ray Day won 18-8; Dawn Harris, John Phillips, Jim Watson lost 21-20; Linda Charleswor­th, Colin Hadlow, Jim Covill won 25-18; Marian Algar, Paul Evans, Brian Dennis won 19-14; Joyce Whitlock, David Knight, Brian Gisby won 25-13.

Bay enjoyed a 27-shot win in a mixed match against VCD retired. Herne Bay 135 VCD 108 Bruce Clayton, Paul Green, Marianne Offer, Linda Charleswor­th lost 18-15; Cliff Cheeseman, Sue Grogan, Dawn Harris, Stuart Emert won 24-8; Diane Wiltshire, Linda Cheeseman, Martin Maguire, Tony Rowson won 19-16; Pat Baldwin, Paul Reddock, Sheila Mcdowell, John Toms lost 19-14; Derek Lucas, Anne-marie Bombone, Eunice Holder, Brian Dennis lost 22-21; John Dryland, Sam Hardy, Richie Callanan, Steve Caruth won 24-14; Marian Algar, David Brice, John Grogan, Jim Covill won 18-11.

Bay also suffered a 19-shot defeat in a mixed match against Thanet. Herne Bay 117 Thanet 136 Jan Starkey, George Johnson, Bob Day won 19-10; Anne-marie Bombone, Vicky Lewis, Jim Covill lost 19-14; Sue Grogan, John Grogan, John Toms lost 21-6; Val Miller, David Brice, Stuart Emert won 22-14; Diane Wiltshire, Roy Chillingwo­rth, Jim Watson won 17-14; Lyn Riches, Danny Keleghar, Jeff Graham won 16-12; Maureen Tobutt, John Offer, Terry Taunton lost 15-12; Jeanette O’brien, Mike Head, Paul Evans lost 21-11. players from Division 4 played a knock-out competitio­n down to the last four, who now go through to the Division semi-finals.

Those going through were Alan Cornfoot and Peter Foster of Canterbury and Chris Fox and Pat Briscoe of Sandwich.

Canterbury Ladies won both rinks against Boughton and by 10 shots overall. Canterbury 37 Boughton 27 Angela Hudson, M. Dilnot, Sue Knott won 20-11: Kay Lloyd, June Strouts, June Baker won 17-16.

Torrential rain stopped play after nine ends when Canterbury Ladies played Sellindge.

Canterbury were well ahead by 11 shots when the heavens opened. Pat Vaughan, Barbara Grundy, Marion Patmore winning 14-5; Joy Burton, Ros Cheesman, Sue Close drawing 7-7.

A highest winning rink of Duncan Ellis, Keith Brooks, Chris Dawson lead the way in Canterbury’s 26-shot win over Victoria Park. Barham visited Lyminge in a friendly match on Sunday but lost all six triples and by 30 shots overall. Brian Reynolds with Rosemary Field, Margaret Morris and Don Minnett win 25-17. Ray Mcdonald with Dennis Tritton, Maggie Porter and Jean Harman win 25-9. Whitstable Ladies won by 27 shots at Herne Bay after winning four of six rinks played. Herne Bay 95 Whitstable Ladies 118 Sylvia Hender with Diane Coupland, Jean Flood and Edna Hall win 25-11. Joan Davey with Jean Reid, June Sutcliffe and Shirley Whitehand victory 25-15. Jeanette May with Rosemary Field, Pat Uden and Maureen James win 21-12. Barbara Mcgillicud­dy with Patricia Vaz , Gail Phasey and Daphne Mcdonald won 20-12; Daphne Ellinor with Patricia Pout, Ann French and Jean Harman lost 13-19.
