Latham could return in Championship

‘We have stumbled a little so it was good to get back to winning ways’

cameo of 36 from 23 balls by Alex Blake guided the Spitfires to 231- 6.

Some stifling bowling and excellent fielding then saw the visitors reduced Overseas star Tom Latham could come back into the reckoning as Kent return to red-ball cricket on Sunday against Glamorgan. The Kiwi batsman has been omitted from the white-ball team this week after making just 16 runs in his previous two 50-over appearances combined and 12 in his sole innings in two T20 appearances. In their first Championship game for three weeks Kent will be seeking to follow-up their 10-wicket romp against the Welsh last month – a match which saw Latham share two opening century stands with Daniel BellDrummond. His 53 and 79 not out made him the first Kent player to score fifties in each innings of their first appearance, though he had 35 runs in the three Championship innings before their white-ball block. Skipper Sam Northeast Natwest T20 Blast, South Group: Friday, June 17: Glamorgan v Kent (at Cardiff). Specsavers County Championship Division 2 : Sunday, June 19: Kent (at Cardiff). Natwest T20 Blast, South Group: Friday, June 24: Kent v Middlesex (at Canterbury). admitted: “There have been selection dilemmas for the past few weeks – to leave someone like Tom out is unbelievable, an international player. “He’s been brilliant, supporting the team, he’s a great man to have in the changing room – he’s quality. “It shows you where we are as a side at the moment if he’s not getting in the side.” Northeast admitted the squad would be amended after Friday night’s T20 in Cardiff, adding: “Some people driving up on Saturday and some driving back. “Tom is a high quality player but we felt like we needed an extra bowler to balance the side out. If the batting line-up keeps firing there’s no need for Tom at the moment.” Kent are third, 11 points behind Division 2 leaders Essex in the race for one promotion spot and Northeast added: “The good thing is we’re very much in the competition in red-ball, we’ve been going well in that. “In seasons past at the half-way point we’ve been struggling and need some serious wins to get up there but we’re right up there and there’s a lot to play for.” ROYAL LONDON ONE-DAY CUP
