Clubs chasing glory on all fronts

CANTERBURY AND HERNE BAY BOTH HAVE GOOD REPRESENTA­TION IN DIVISION 4 COUNTY SEMI-FINALS

Canterbury BC

Canterbury have representa­tion in every discipline of the Division 4 County semi-finals.

Dave Holmes and Peter Foster are both through in the singles, with Alan Cornfoot in the two wood singles.

Michael Hutchinson carries the flag in the unbadged singles with Chris Dawson partnering Mick Fisher in the pairs.

Peter Foster, Mick Fisher and Jeff Vane go in the triples and in the fours, the club are represente­d by Chris Dawson, Roger Blissett, John King and Malcolm Nicholson.

Canterbury went into the Forest of Blean game against Ashford Town with a depleted team due to county competitio­ns but the reserves stepped up and helped the team to a fantastic 75-shot victory to ensure all eight points. Canterbury 139 Ashford Town 64 Dave Rickard, Michael Lloyd, Alan Cornfoot won 30-11; Dave Holmes, Keith Wright, Tony Dobson won 25-9; Bryan Nicholson, Mervyn Gulvin, Dave Todd won 17-12; Brian White, Colin Goldsack, Malcolm Nicholson won 23-11; Darren Ellis, Ian Burton, Dave Charlton won 22-9; Tom Nelson, Mike Talbot, Steve Wells won 22-12.

Canterbury Ladies won against Thanet by eight shots after winning three of the four triples played. Canterbury 64 Thanet 56 Chris Deweduwe, Rosemary Wheeler, June Baker won 20-12; Liz Long, Jenny Wilkinson, Sue Mates won 17-13; Jill Jenkins, Sue Close, Karin Walker won 15-12; Joy Burton, Karen Bishop, Yvonne Gambrill lost 19-12.

The ladies did, however, lose on every rink and by 20 shots against Lyminge. Canterbury Ladies 36 Lyminge 56 Madelaine Mcconomy, Carole Nelson, Sue Close lost 17-15; Sue Longley, Heather Goldsack, Sue Knott lost 25-12; June Mitchell, Wendy Wright, Maureen Dilnot lost 14-9.

Canterbury lost just two of the seven rinks against West Wickham and won by 20 shots overall. Canterbury 150 West Wickham 130 Keith Havers, P. Beasley, June Baker, Pauline Darling won 18-17; Sandra Swann, Wendy Wright, Ian Mitchell, Malcolm Nicholson won 21-13; Madelaine Mcconomy, Tim Woods, Maureen Dilnot, Bryan Nicholson won 23-11; J. wilkinson, Jean Beasley, Keith Wright, George Long won 23-11; June Mitchell, Jane CareyHarri­s, Chris Dawson, Colin Strouts won 23-10; Hugh Lundin, Peter Darling, Marion Patmore, David Swann drew 15-15; Maureen Aitkin, Bob Keen, Ros Cheeseman, Bernard Woodhams lost 23-12; Liz Long, Val Lundin, Michael Lloyd, Michael Hutchinson lost 30-16.

The ladies held an Open Fours competion which was contested by 28 teams playing three games of 75 minutes.

Although Canterbury had five teams in the competion, none finished in the top three.

The winners were Eileen Pidduck, Anita Hubbard, Pat Jones and Jean Johnson of Victoria Park. Gateway were second and Cheriton were third.

Herne Bay

In the Kent county competitio­ns, Herne Bay have several men through to the Divisional semi finals.

Eddie Allen and Dave Mason progressed in the badged singles, Mason and Ian Robb are through in the pairs, Mike Trotter, Bob Baldwin and Brian Dennis in the triples and Trotter, Baldwin, Dennis and Allen in the 4s.

In the National Top Club competitio­n, Bay secured a good victory over Canterbury with wins in the 2 and 4 wood singles, pairs and triples to record a 4-1 overall win. Bay will visit Sandwich in the next round.

Bay won four of the six triples against visiting Aylesham & Snowdown and by 57 shots in total. Herne Bay 130 Aylesham & Snowdown 73 Tony Bombone, Tony Ackland, Jim Covill won 23-7; Paul Reddock, John Phillips, Jim Watson won 30-6; George Johnson, Danny Keleghar, Stuart Emert won 31-9; Richie Callanan, John Offer, David Knight won 19-14; Sam Hardy, John Toms, Terry Taunton lost 17-14; John Dryland, Steve Caruth, Derek Hewett lost 20-13.

Bay split the six mixed triples played against Kent Police but won by five shots overall. Herne Bay 110 Kent Police 105 Jan Starkey, Alan Day, Paul Evans won 23-13; Alan Jordan, Linda Charleswor­th, Jim Covill won 27-8; Diane Wiltshire, Pam Head, Jeff Graham lost 25-6; Maureen Tobutt, Gill Baker, Bob Day lost 18-14; Vicky Lewis, Edie Nicholls, Stuart Emert lost 24-13; Pat Knight, Derek Hewett, David Knight won 27-17.

Faversham

Playing in a Forest of Blean Triples League game against Whitstable, Faversham’s men suffered a 46-shot loss. Faversham 68 Whitstable 114 J.graham, M.butt, A.tuff lost 19-16; T.schofield, K.jackson, J.chase lost 22-9; J.winslow, K.neame, M.grove won 14-13; R.cordell, J.harris, S.gibbons won 14-10; G.ashurst, A.walker, B.grove lost 17-11; N.gore, D.mitchell, J.fullagar lost 33-5.

Faversham Ladies, playing against Civil Service on Friday, won by 24 shots. Faversham 41 Civil Service 17 Gill Barnes-web, Barbara Franklin, Janet Wimble won 21-8; Elaine Hinkly, Sheila Howard, Jude Prosser won 20-9.

Faversham suffered a 24-shot defeat in the East Kent Mixed Triples League against Ashford Town on Saturday. Faversham 88 Ashford Town 112 D.ayres, Barbara Franklin, K.neame won 24-6; R.cordell, Sheila Howard, J.winslow lost 29-7; Linda Abbitt, N.gore, J.harris lost 22-11; B.meadows, F.williams, Janet Wimble lost 24-7; M.butt, E.bowyer, Jude Prosser won 18-14; Steph Flower, G.ashurst, J.fullagar won 21–17.

Faversham went down by 30 shots playing mixed triples at Wear Bay on Sunday. Wear Bay 92 Faversham 62 D.ayres, P.carlevero, Barbara Franklin lost 27-7; M.woodward, J.graham, Janet Wimble lost 29-6; B.crump, Elaine Hinkly, J.winslow won 19-8; J.wimble-roberts, S.ewen, D.mitchell lost 18-15; B.meadows, R.cordell, A.walker won 16-10.

Chislet CW

Members from New Romney, Whitstable, Birchingto­n, Aylesham, Herne Bay, Canterbury and the host club took part in the first Chislet Colliery BC all-day tournament.

Twenty triples took part in the sixth charity day on behalf of Kent Search & Rescue.

The winners were C Harrison, T Harrison and C Penn ahead of A Black, P Back and A Mitchell with R Greenstree­t, A Nisbet and D Dignam in third. The day raised £800 for the cause.

Chislet went down by 24 shots in a friendly at Minster after winning just two of the six rinks. Minster 110 Chislet 86 Malcolm Harris, Diana Kirkbank, Tony Kirkbank lost 19-14; Derek Trussell, Dave Cowley, Sue Clarke lost 25-9; Colin Rogers, Bob Hill, Leslie Eames drew 17-17; Clive Vurnum, Jean Trussell, Dave Hoskins lost 13-12; Michael Holmes, Wilf Laughton, Pat Rogers won 17-16; Jack Cramp, Rick Eames, Brian Lucas won 17-10.

Chislet claimed 13 points to hosts Ramsgate’s two to enjoy victory in the second leg of their League Challenge against the Thanet club. Ramsgate 93 Chislet 99 Alan Spokes, Tony Bailey, Jean Trussell won 17-11; Stan Knott, Derk Walker, Chris Tomassi won 19-12; Michael Holmes, Wilf Laughton, Sue Clarke won 19-9; Jack Cramp, Jim Harlow, Val Philpott won 20-16; Malcolm Harris, Diane Kirkbank, Tony Kirkbank won 15-14; Derek Trussell, Michael Tomassi, Rick Eames lost 21-9.

Oyster IBC

The Oyster lost on just one rink at Gillingham side Prince Arthur and won by 40 shots overall. Prince Arthur 71 Oyster 111 Rita Marsh, Frank Rose, Phil Scott-martin won 18-14; Jean Rose, Maurice O’dell, Bernard Marsh won 23-9; Marion Harrison, Wayne Diprose, John Day drew 13-13; Linda Snook, Peter Gibson, Ron Clee won 27-5; Ken Shorter, Janet Whitbread, Gordon Hayes won 18-13; John Snook, Ruth Emert, Brian Gambrill lost 17-12.

Oyster also lost on only one rink at home to Ashford and enjoyed a 90-shot victory. Oyster 150 Ashford 60 Ann Moon, Irene Godfrey, John Cheesman 27-4; Maurice O’dell, Peter Field, Jacqueline Harvey drew 16-16; Jan Turner, David Shelton, Ron Clee won 32-6; Diana Whybrow, Peter Gibson, David Turner won 39-5; Carol Field, Mo Gray, Bernard Marsh lost 18-15; Rita Marsh, Wayne Diprose, Brian Gambrill won 21-11.

Oyster did, however, lose three of the rinks at Essex side Tye Green and draw on another to lose by 20 shots overall. Oyster ladies attended the presentati­on of the Valanndor Trophy to receive their trophy having beaten Ashford in the Final during the Winter Season.

The winners of the County competitio­ns for 2015-16 season were presented with their trophies and Sue Swan, of the Oyster, received a trophy for the senior player of the year.

Whitstable

A thumping home win over Southend provided the highlight of Whitstable’s busy programme.

The Essex team sent six mixed rinks all of which were beaten as Whitstable triumphed 140-73.

Whitstable also enjoyed a 20-shot win at Ramsgate and beat Faversham 114-69 in the Forest of Blean League. Barham went down by 48 shots at home to Victoria Park in a friendly after winning just one of six triples played. Dee Williams, Brian White, Phil Cross drew 15-15; Robert Baecke, Linda Lewis, Gerry Ferrett lost 32-13; Norman Armstrong, Hazel Hatton, Ray Hatton lost 24-8; Mike Hurlock, Kim Kurtis, Neil Sladden lost 19-8; Eric Marsh, Colin Elderson, Selwyn Lewis lost 24-7; Linda Marshall, Dennis Rose, Nigel Sladden won 23-8.
