Former postman Tony Wenham had a round to remember at Canterbury on Sunday, producing a first-class round that won him the Jack Snell Trophy.

Wenham, playing off a handicap of 10, had a mixed bag over his opening nine holes, starting with four pars, adding a birdie at the fifth but following that with a double bogey and a bogey.

Another birdie at the eighth and a par at the ninth took him to the turn in 37.

The 66-year-old launched his back nine with three successive bogeys but then added four pars before a bogey-par finish completed an inward half of 39 and a gross 76, net 66.

In second place, two strokes behind Wenham, was 12-handicap Kurt Bryant, a 15- year- old member of the club’s scholarship scheme.

One of the last starters from the 10th tee, Bryant began with two double bogeys but then dropped only two more strokes before the turn.

A birdie two at the fifth helped the youngster to a three-over-par 39 on his back nine and a net 68.

Squeezed into third place on countback after shooting an outstanding one-overpar 72 gross was Tim O’reilly, who also launched his round from the 10th tee.

O’reilly, playing off four, dropped only two shots on his first nine – at his opening hole and at the 16th.

Coming home, he had birdies at the first and seventh holes but dropped a stroke at the fourth.

Three players were involved in a tie for third place, one stroke behind Bryant and O’reilly, and of these, eight-handicap Richard Askham came out on top courtesy of a countback.

Askham continued his rehabilitation after illness with his best score since returning three weeks ago, making birdies at the fourth and 13th holes.

Twenty-handicap Keith Nicholls also signed for a 69 and although he failed to get the better of Askham, he did manage to finish ahead of 13-handicap Tony Place.

Place was going along nicely until four from home, when his challenge dissolved with two double-bogeys and a single.
