Trophy treble celebrated

CANTERBURY WIN LEAGUE TITLE, DON ANSTED CUP AND VERSATILIT­Y TOURNAMENT

Canterbury collected a hat-trick of trophies at the District Netball League’s annual presenatat­on night.

Team manager and league president Margaret Ansted and the players turned out in good numbers to celebrate their season’s success, winning the Division 1 title and Don Ansted Cup as well as the Versatilit­y Shield they clinched at the start of the season.

Black Jacks claimed a double success winning Division 2, scoring more than 600 goals and conceding only 200, and the George Wilson Plate, after beating Action Pumps in the final. Season star players were: Division 1: Ann Sampson ( Cant e rbury) , Jayne Conroy (CFA Diamonds), Nanette Miles (Pilgrims), Laura Packman ( Action Pumps), Siobhan Matthews (Oasis), Natasha Wilkins (Breakaways), Claire Ledger (Bishops).

Division 2: Nikki HaxtonJone­s ( Black Jacks) , Catherine Keep (Canterbury Back Tos), Kelly Scorer (Bluebird), Kate Wiggins ( Academy Reds), Louise Hale (Wahl), Luciana Curtis (UKC), Zoe Wright (Pilgrims U19s), Juliette Adams (Academy Whites).

A new award for the Best Attack and Best Defence was introduced by the league committee for the first time, with the winners receiving silver salvers.

Debbie Cook (Oasis) and Lola Leveridge (Wahl) were the Best Attack in Division 1 and 2, while Jayne Conroy ( CFA Diamonds) and Grace Castle (Canterbury Back Tos) were Best Defence in the respective divisions.

Canterbury Academy White team won the Fair Play Shield, while umpire and committee member Sheila Enfield was named Sportswoma­n of the Year for the second successive year.

Rosie Barton of (Canterbury Back Tos) claimed two prizes – the Umpires Award and the Back to Netball Trophy at the end of her first season

Rosemary Pretty (Bishops) won the Endeavour Cup, awarded to a recipient who emb o d i e s the spirit and values of the league.

The league resumes in October, with new teams always welcome.
