Progress made to county finals

Club make headway in county and national competitio­ns Canterbury

Canterbury bowlers Peter Foster (singles), Alan Cornfoot (two wood singles), Chris Dawson and Mick Fisher (pairs), Peter Foster, Mick Fisher and Jeff Vane (triples) are all through to the Kent County Division 4 finals.

There have also been some good results in national competitio­ns, with progressio­n into the Kent semi-finals for Cornfoot in the senior singles, the senior pairs with Steve Wells and the mixed fours with Sally Blissett, Sue Gurr and Steve Large.

Sixteen teams competed this weekend for the Mathew and Allen Trophies.

Two teams won all three of their games and played a final of 11 ends.

Three-time previous winners Alan Burnap and John King were ahead for most of the game but lost in the last few ends to Dave Rickard and Dave Charlton.

Canterbury B beat Folkestone Park in the first round of the Bert Cox Cup by four shots, winning on the home rink by eight shots and losing on the away by four shots. Rink scores Chris Dawson, Roger Blissett, John King, Malcolm Nicholson lost 14-11; Malcolm Price, Dave Rickard, Colin Strouts, Dave Todd won 29-21.

Canterbury ladies had a victory over Ash. Canterbury ladies 39 Ash 19 Barbara Grundy, Ros Cheeseman, Sue Close won 23-11; Angela Hudson, Rosemary Wheeler, Bim Bishop won 16-8.

Canterbury had a 24-shot win against Herne Bay, to claim 5.5 of eight available points in the Forest of Blean League game which was only played to 12 ends due to torrential rain. Canterbury 71 Herne Bay 47 Malcolm Price, John King, Malcolm Nicholson won 12-3; Tom Nelson, Mike Talbot, Steve Wells drew 11-11; Ian Burton, Dave Charlton, Jeff Vane won 15-8; Damien Hone, David Holmes, Tony Dobson lost 8-6; Brian Nicholson, Colin Strouts, Dave Todd won 16-5; Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Alan Cornfoot lost 12-11.

Canterbury ladies lost to Faversham by six shots. Canterbury ladies 27 Faversham 33 Jean Bourner, Sue Mates, Carole Nelson lost 17-16; Pat Vaughan, Christiana Dewedue, June Baker lost 16-11.

Canterbury won three of the four rinks against Tilmanston­e and by 15 shots overall. Canterbury 67 Tilmanston­e 52 Brian Wheeler, Tom Nelson, Colin Strouts won 21-14; Don Parry, Ian Mitchaell, Malcolm Nicholson won 18-14; Keith Havers, George Long, Bernard Woodhams won 17-10; Peter Needham, Alan Burnap, Dave Swann lost 14-11.

The club edged to victory by 11 shots against Aylesham. Canterbury 104 Aylesham 93 Keith Wright, Ian Mitchell, Malcolm Nicholson won 17-11; Dave Rickard, Dave Swann, Colin Strouts lost 25-13; Michael Doyle, Chris Dawson, John King lost 18-14; Peter Needham, Keith Brooks, Bernard Woodhams won 16-15; Tom Nelson, Dave Jenkins, Ian Burton won 25-12; Michael Lloyd, George Long, Bill Hillman won 19-12.

Canterbury picked up five points from the possible eight available against Faversham in the East Kent Mixed Triples League. Canterbury 101 Faversham 87 Peter Needham, Madelaine Mcconomy, Bill Hudson won 24-10; Jackie Charlton, Dave Jenkins, Dave Charlton lost 16-14; Joy Burton, Christiana De Weduwe, Bernard Woodhams lost 19-17; Mervyn Gulvin, Sue Close, Bryan Nicholson won 20-11; Bob Keen, Jill Jenkins, Dick Mortley lost 18-11; Richard Close, Yvonne Gambrill, Ian Burton won 15-13. 20-shot Herne Bay Probus overcame rivals from Probus Ashford in squally and wet conditions at Chislet to claim the Probus Cup after winning five of the six triples. Bay had mixed fortunes in the divisional semi-finals of the County competitio­ns with only Dave Mason (singles) and Mike Trotter, Bob Baldwin, Brian Dennis and Eddie Allen progressin­g to finals.

In the Forest of Blean League, Bay only managed to pick up 2.5 of the eight points available at Canterbury in a match reduced to 12 ends per triple due to heavy rain. In a mixed match at Thanet, Bay prevailed by 39 shots overall. Thanet 84 Herne Bay 123 Sylvia Sweeting, Maureen Tobutt, John Toms won 16-9; Pat Knight, Mike Tibby, Paul Evans won 13-11; Mary Watson, Ronnie Phillips, Bob Simcock won 21-14; Jeanette O’brien, Vicky Lewis, Jeff Graham won 20-13; Martin Maguire, John Phillips, Gill Baker lost 19-12; Sue Grogan, Sam Hardy, Ray Chipperfie­ld won 22-7; John Dryland, Diane Wiltshire, David Knight won 19-11.
