The city’s oldest stonemason, aged 80
Kentish Gazette, January 23, 1948
Pictured is Mr Harry Legget, of 7 Love Lane, Canterbury, who at the age of 80 is employed as a banker mason on the work of restoring the bomb-damaged Fyndon Gate at St Augustine’s College.
Mr Legget is probably one of the oldest masons at work in the country. Born in Canterbury, he served his apprenticeship in the city, and later went to Folkestone, where he resided for 45 years.
He returned to Canterbury three years ago and is now employed by Messrs Norman and Burt, the contractors who are carrying out the restoration work.
Mr and Mrs Legget celebrated their golden wedding nearly six years ago.
This is not the first time Mr Legget has worked on the Fyndon Gate. In 1889, he spent a year helping restore it.
Although he works a full five-day week in Canterbury, Mr Legget travels early on Saturday morning to Folkestone to complete six days.
His great ambition is to assist in the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral.
