Father and son take the prize

The father-and-son combinatio­n of John and Andy Wigg combined to win the Captain’s Prize.

John, who plays off 12, and fivehandic­ap Andy scored 46 points, with halves of 24 and 22, to beat their closest challenger­s by two points on Sunday.

A countback was needed to determine second place and that went to Mark Wickenden and Nigel Hylands, whose back nine score was better than that of Robin Holness and Mick Clark.

Pat Goode and son Stephen collected the prize for the best aggregate score on the par-three holes, while John Dorries and Simon Goodfellow won the par-fours and Mark Bryant and Andy Williamson the par-fives.

Longest drives were achieved by Paul Stewart and Terry Hancock and nearest-the-pin prizes went to Michael Cunningham, John Isherwood, Ken Small, Jim Miller and Simon Goodfellow.

The previous day, there was a runaway victory in the Captain’s Weekend Team Stableford for David and Marion Hawes, John Dorries and Wendy Richards, whose 122 points was 10 better than runners-up Ian and Diane Florence, Annie Mclaren and Peter Soutan.

Third of the 14 teams, eight points further back, were Rhona Hunter, Simon Goodfellow, Jack Barons and David Kingston.

A yellow ball game was won by Peter and Margaret Francis, Stewart White and Gillian Bayliss.

Malcolm and Eileen Wagget, Ali Beck and Peter Rogers, with Anne Arnold, Phil Cryer and Billy and Maxine Field best on the par-fours and Sam and Barbara Plews and Paul and Jenny Blake taking the prize on the par-fives.

Nearest-the-pin winners were Peter Soutan, Margaret Francis, Peter Francis, June Parkin, John Cardy, Jacqui Mount, Gordon Pagdin, Annie Mclaren, Peter Rogers, John Wigg and Stewart White.

Club captain Alison Kingston, who was raising funds for her charity, Prostate Cancer UK, made the prize presentati­ons on both days.

The trophy is played for on a matchplay basis over 36 holes, with the morning being four foursomes matches and the afternoon eight singles games.

The morning games were tight, with Chestfield achieving a one-point advantage, winning two of the foursomes games and halving another. The afternoon games went Chestfield’s way, with five wins and one halved match.

Chestfield will now play in the final at Littleston­e on September 24.

Overall winner of Saturday’s medal competitio­n was John Tamplin with an exceptiona­l net 66. Gianni Vitiello (net 74) was victorious in the low handicap section, with Del Clark (net 75) second and Graham Birch (net 75) third. In the 13 and higher handicap section, Tamplin was the clear winner, with Kate Vane (net 71) runner-up and David Relph (net 74) third. Best scratch score of the day was Nick Gladstone, with a gross score of 80, showing just how difficult the conditions were.

On Sunday, the wind had eased a little and a large field took part in a foursomes Stableford event, which was won by David Wale and Roy Paine, with 38 points. Ash Evans and Will Ferneyhoug­h were runners-up, finishing ahead of Phil Veness and Bob Thompson on countback.

The winner of the club’s junior championsh­ip and winner of both the scratch and handicap cups was Sam Robertson, with a gross score of 76 (net 73). Zac D’souza was runnerup, while Sam Menzies was third. All three had the same score of net 73, so the handicap result was decided on countback. The overall winners of the Old Salts Invitation Day were John Dowle and F O’boyle with 47 points, who finished ahead of Robbie and Nick Fudge on countback. Third on countback were David Dale and C.barnard with 45 points. Nearest the pin winners: 6th Nick Fudge, 9th Mike Edgar, 15th M.crowther, 4/13th Colin Holton, 18th Ian Wingrove. Winners of the front nine were John Wegner and Keith Davey with 24 points and winners of the back nine were Malcolm Cane and M.crowther on countback with 23 points. The raffle raised £165 for the Air Ambulance.
