Winners take title for third time

Canterbury secured the Forest of Blean League title for a third time, with a game to spare, after seeing off Whitstable. Canterbury 110 Whitstable 63 Malcolm Price, Damien Hone, Tony Dobson lost 12-10; Ian Burton, John King, Malcolm Nicholson won 31-12; Bryan Nicholson, Alan Marsh, Colin Strouts won 21-10; Ian Mitchell, Mike Talbot, Steve Wells drew 12-12; Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Alan Cornfoot won 17-9; Jo Vandapeer, Chris Dawson, Dave Charlton won 19-8.

The annual Dickins Trophy, contested each year by mixed triples from Canterbury, was won by captain Colin Strouts, June Strouts and Sally Blissett who won all four games in a field of 20 teams.

Canterbury ladies played an away match at Bohemian BC, Reading, a club which has to be accessed by a ferry service as it is situated in the middle of the River Thames. Bohemian 119 Canterbury Ladies 114 June Mitchell, Rosemary Wheeler, Val Hughes, Maureen Dilnot won 28-11; Maureen Aitkin, Sheila Holden, Sandra Swann, Heather Goldsack won 21-16; Pat Vaughan, Jane Webster, Sue Trott, Karin Walker lost 24-21; Christiane De Weduwe, Joy Burton, Barbara Grundy, Sue Close lost 18-12; Margie B, Wyn Brooks, Rowena Laming, Marion Patmore lost 21-14; Liz Long, Junko Lord, Jean Bourner, Wendy Wright lost 29-18.

Despite losing by 12 shots against Sandwich, Canterbury ladies remain top of the Dover League with one game to play. Canterbury 27 Sandwich 39 Home Sally Blissett, Yvonee Gambrill, Karin Walker lost 19-12; Away Liz Long, Maddie Mcconomy, Sue Close lost 20-15.

The club’s ladies lost to Minster by seven shots. Canterbury Ladies 40 Minster 47 Junko Lord, Rowena Laming, Heather Goldsack lost 13-11; Liz Long, Sue Trott, Christine De Weduwe won 18-11; Maureen Aitkin, Sandra Swann, Wendy Wright lost 23-11.

Canterbury’s men lost by 54 shots to Minster. Canterbury 55 Minster 109 Bob Keen, Dave Jenkins, Mervyn Gulvin lost 17-9; Darren Ellis, Dave Swann, Bernard Woodhams won 14-12; Kieth Wright, G. Francis, Bill Hudson lost 35-10; Dean Ellis, Roger Gowan, Colin Goldsack lost 22-11; Peter Needham, George Long, Leon King lost 23-11.

The city club were edged out by eight shots against Ash. Canterbury 73 Ash 81 Duncan Ellis, George Long, Dave Charlton lost 18-11; Kieth Wright, Roger Blissett, Bryan Nicholson lost 18-17; Peter Needham, Ian Mitchell, Colin Goldsack lost 21-6; Darren Ellis, Dave Swann, Chris Dawson won 23-9; Bob Keen, Roger Gowan, Bernard Woodhams won 16-15.

The ladies had a narrow three-point win over Kearsney despite going unbeaten on three rinks. Canterbury Ladies 32 Kearsney 29 Sandra Swann, Wendy Wright, Marion Patmore won 13-12; Maureen Aitkin, Rosemary Wheeler, Heather Goldsack drew 10-10; Christiann­e Deweduwe, Joy Burton, Sandra King won 9-7. Hougham, Richie Callanan, Jim Covill lost 20-12; Sue Grogan, John Locke, Alan Day, Eunice Holder lost 27-8.

Bay Ladies edged past Halls by two shots despite splitting the two rinks played. Herne Bay Ladies 29 Halls Ladies 27 Val Miller, Gill Phillips, Ellen Foster lost 17-12; Jeanette O’brien, Marianne Offer, Eunice Holder won 17-10.
