Medal haul passes the 100-mark

Herne Bay SC took a team of 32 swimmers to Dover for the White Cliffs Gala and returned with a haul of 112 medals, including 18 golds.

Rose Douglas-sutton, 12, led the way with seven golds, winning the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and 50m and 100m freestyle and butterfly events, plus landing a silver for good measure.

Fellow 12-year-old Oliver Edwards won gold medals in the 50m backstroke; 100m individual medley and 50m breaststro­ke races, plus three silvers and one bronze medal.

Emmett Holdsworth, 11, took golds in the 200m breaststro­ke plus 50m and 100m butterfly and a bronze, while 13-year-old Charley Langford swam for golds in the 100m backstroke; 100m individual medley and 200m freestyle events.

Nathan Packman, 13, took gold in the 200m backstroke plus a silver and two bronzes.

There were three silver medals and three bronzes for Marcus Crossman, nine, two silvers and a bronze for 10-year-old James Page and 14-year-old Owen Head, two silvers for Louis Johnson, 11, and 14-year-old Oliver Carmen plus silvers for 11-year-olds Freddie Evans and Joseph Hayle.

Brooke Olson, 10, claimed three silvers and four bronzes, nine-year-old Alyssa Kelly a silver and two bronzes, Scarlett Langford, 11, a silver and a bronze, Tilly Compton, 13, a silver and two bronzes.

There were bronzes for 10-year-old Niamh Maxwell and Ben Wright, 13, while other competitor­s included Tamzin Mullins (10), Eleanor Kimble (11), Lacey Compton (14), Abbie Bromboszcz (11), Hermione Carmen (11), Keira Twyman (11), Ruby Hill (12) and Tommy Mahoney (9), who made his Open Gala debut.

Other Bay swimmers were Hana Allen (13), May Woolfe (12), Isabel Atkins (11), Olivia Kimble (11), Sofia Thompson (11) and Zara Green (11).

Several swimmers qualified into the Skins finals where the competitor­s swim for cash prizes. The youngest through to the girls’ 9/10 Skins was Tamzin Mullins, while James Page came second in the boys’ 9/10 Skins, earning a prize.

In the girls’ 11/12 Skins, Rose Douglas-sutton came third, while the boys’ 11/12 Skins saw cash prizes for winner Oliver Edwards and third-placed Emmet Holdsworth with Louis Johnson also competing.

In the girls’ 13/14, sisters Tilly and Lacey Compton raced against each other with Tilly taking third and the money. In the boys’ 13/14 Skins, Charley Langford won with Owen Head in second with Ben Wright also finishing.
