City club hit by goal burst

Canterbury

-

Canterbury’s men remain pointless in the national Premier Division after a 4-3 defeat at home to East Grinstead on Saturday evening.

The city club took the lead through Australian debutant Kris Glass from a penalty corner after 13 minutes and just three minutes later his fellow summer arrival Tom Bean struck to make it 2- 0.

The game changed with three goals in as many minutes 10 minutes into the second half.

First Robert Schenk converted a penalty corner on 46 minutes and seconds later, Dominic Bowden equalised.

Wesley Jackson completed the turnaround for East Grinstead on 48 minutes to leave the city club shell-shocked.

The goals dried up until four minutes from time when EGS made the game safe with another Schenk strike from a penalty corner, although Canterbury had the final say through skipper Craig Boyne with a minute remaining.

Elsewhere, the 2nds had to settle for a 3-3 draw at East Grinstead 2nds to slip to third in Higgins Group London Premier Division.

Despite a big win in their opening game, Canterbury made a slow start and fell 1- 0 down inside 10 minutes, although Tom Roblin fired the equaliser after good work from man-of-the-match Tariq Marqano.

Marqano turned the game with a fine run, beating two players to produce a reverse stick strike into the corner.

Some dogged defending then secured possession which led to a quick counter attack and Sam Barrett slotting the third before the break. The champions, however, could not add to their lead after the turnaround and were made to pay as the hosts netted twice late on after defensive lapses.

Tyler Dees netted for the Pilgrims to secure a 1-1 draw at Holcombe 2nds.

The 3rds won 4-1 against Holcombe 2A with Shane Godwin setting them on their way with an early double. Sam Curd grabbed the third following a flowing team move and a solo goal from Zak Williams made it four before Holcs hit a consolation.

George Pound scored twice as the 4ths won 5-2 at Holcombe 3rds.

Pound and Steve Laslett made it 2- 0 at the break and although Holcs netted twice in the second half, Pound’s second, a short corner strike from Robert Preston and Chris Ashenden’s single ensured the win.

The Millers overcame Gore Court 3rds 2- 0 at home with Connor Laslett getting one of the second-half goals.

The 5ths enjoyed a 4- 0 success at home to Holcombe 4ths with Richard Alywin and Mark Lister goals setting them on their way.

The Griffins endured a 10-1 defeat at Holcombe 4A, although Callum Lea’s composed finish produced a fine city club goal.

Parvez Bhatti bobbled a late equaliser from a short corner

Canterbury’s Eliza Brett is challenged by East Grinstead’s Alice Pyrgos, left, and Sarah Kerly, right, in possession to ensure the Squires came away from their game at Holcombe 5 with a 1-1 draw.

James Cox’s penalty corner conversion was the sole high point as the Friars went down 3-1 at home to Holcombe 5As.

Canterbury Ladies are waiting for their first win in Investec Premier Division after being thwarted by East Grinstead late-on in their opening game at Polo Farm.

Mel Clewlow’s 52nd-minute penalty corner conversion looked to have been enough for the city club but Bridget Blackwood rescued a point for the visitors with a minute to go.
