Griffith earns place in record books
Angling
Canterbury sea angler Andrew Griffith has written his name into the UK record books after landing a bluefin tuna which weighs almost twice as much as an adult man.
Griffith regularly travels to West Wales where he heads out from Milford Haven aboard Andrew Alsop’s board White Water 2.
On his most recent trip he caught and released a bluefin tuna weighing appoximately 300lb – the average human male weighs just 187lb.
Griffith said: “This now means I am the first UK angler to successfully catch and release four sea species over 100lb from one port with one skipper.
“The fishing is so good off of the Welsh coast that I regularly drive six hours each way to enjoy my sport – the results speak for themselves.”
Griffith is no stranger to monster fish, in 2013 the Gazette reported on his catch and release of a 235lb porbeagle shark.
Three weeks later, he reeled-in a 194lb shortfin mako – the first UK mako caught in 42 years which was recognised as part of the world’s first IGFA Shark Slam.
Griffith’s form continued with a 167lb blue shark and his impressive form led to TV, radio and news appearances and articles in American, Dutch and UK fishing magazines.
He has also caught and released common skate of 196lb in Scotland to make him one of a handful of anglers nationwide to have caught and released five sea species over 100lb.
