Lady captain triumphs in opening day encounter

Oyster IBC Ladies’ opening match of the season was the Captain versus Vice-captain game.

New captain Sara Trotter’s team played vice-captain Sylvia Sweeting’s team and won on five rinks to record a 41-shot victory. Captain 134 Vice-captain 93 Doreen Masters, Barbara Jarrett, Shirley Fey, Jan Allen won 19-13 against Monika Thompson, Anne Tanson, Jean Rose, Yvonne Gambrill; Ann Moon, Barbara Gordon, Barbara Grundy, Sara Trotter won 24-9 against Linda Snook, Wendy Green, Sylvia Sweeting, Sue Swan; Jan Turner, Gloria Clarke, Janet Pamphilon, Hilary Avis won 22-15 against Pauline Hogston, Alison Mcdonald, Penny Perkins, Janet Drewitt; Pauline Payne, Rose Penniall, Sylvia Whiting won 21-13 against Diana Whybrow, Margaret Dance, Jacqueline Harvey; Rita Marsh, Ros Cheeseman, Madeline Mcconomy won 24-8 against Jeanette O’brien, Elaine Milliner, Anita Harding; Lynda Balding, Denise Guy, Valerie Bell, Dawn Harris lost 17-13 to Chris Appleton, Jean Bourner, Carol Dalby, Joyce Whitlock; Sheila Tibby, Maureen Aitken, Carole Nelson lost 18-11 to Ann Williams, Heather Sahathevan, Rose Harley.

Both men and ladies made a good start to their Kent League campaigns.

The ladies went to Ashford in their first game and though the rinks were shared, the Oyster won by 14 shots to take seven points. Ashford 102 Oyster 116 Shirley Fey, Chris Benneworth, Alison Taylor, Yvonne Gambrill lost 23-17; Sylvia Sweeting, Marion Harrison, Karen Bishop, Sara Trotter won 15-13; Ann Moon, Barbara Grundy, Sue Close, Sue Swan won 37-8; Maureen Aitken, Barbara Gordon, Joyce Whitlock, Jan Allen lost 21-18; Linda Snook, Gloria Clarke, Chris Appleton, Janet Drewitt lost 22-9; Rita Marsh, Elaine Milliner, Dawn Harris, Hilary Avis won 20-15.

The men’s first Kent League game was against Mote Park where they won on five rinks and by 30 shots overall to claim nine points. Oyster 129 Mote Park 99 Gordon Hayes, John Baker, Eddie Swan, Roger Benneworth won 31-12; Ron Clee, David Appleton, David Turner, Ian Burton won 27-14; Colin Chapman, John Chase, Peter Boeg, Brian Gentle won 22-18; Ken Shorter, Phil Scott-martin, John Cheesman, John Day won 21-19; Fred Masters, Frank Rose, Brian Gambrill, Norman Hunt won 17-14; Malcolm Price, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bob James, David Ferguson lost 22-11.

Their second game was against Bromley where the Oyster won on six rinks, drew one, and lost the eighth, but enjoyed an overall 32-shot win for 8.5pts. Oyster 163 Bromley 131 Ken Shorter, Gordon Bourn, Bernard Marsh, Phil Scott-martin won 22-19; Peter Hogston, David Appleton, David Turner, Ian Burton drew 20-20; Barry Tanson, Don Keeler, Peter Boeg, Brian Gentle won 19-12; Paul Drane, Colin Marsh, Gordon Hayes, John Day won 21-12; Maurice O’dell, Noel Henry, Peter Gibson, Jim Covill won 19-12; Mervyn Gulvin, Brian Maxted, Colin Holder, David Charlton won 25-10; Paul Reddock, Mo Gray, Wayne Diprose, Ron Pring won 25-18; Peter Mann, G.davis, John Baker, David Shelton lost 28-12.
