Lee leads way in monthly medal
Canterbury ladies’ October Medal took place on a balmy autumn day which saw four women play below handicap. Lyn Lee (h24) led the 32-strong field with a net 69 on countback from Maxine Field (h29) and lady captain Alison Letts (h19) respectively. Muriel Davison (h36) managed to get her handicap cut with a net of 70 and was closely pursued by Ann Arnold (h21), Peggy Ferrett (h23) and Gillian Bailey (h28) who all carded 71. The Margaret Vernon Cup saw Lyn Lee (h23) storming home with 38 points, one clear of 16-handicapper Fran Fearn with Jacqueline Mount in third with 34 points playing off 13. The Canterbury ladies’ autumn meeting saw 30 members take part, with the early starters having to cope with a heavy downpour. The ladies played an 18-hole medal round in the morning and a 12-hole greensomes in the afternoon followed by dinner and prize presentation. The day’s nine-hole competition was won by Val Sargeant (h36) from Edna Furness (h36). Sarah Wetherell (h26) continued her recent good form to become the overall winner with a net 72 on countback from Jane Webber (h21), back after a longterm injury. Gillian Soutar (h15) was a shot back in third with Anne White (h34) taking fourth place on countback from Dian Florence (h32). The Ethel Brooks Cup was awarded to Gillian Soutar for best aggregate score from the spring and autumn meetings, while the Mary Edmondson Scratch Bowl was won by Alison Kingston for best aggregate scratch score from the two meetings. The best front nine was won by Sue Kerr (h36) from Diane Florence (h32), with the best back nine won by Lizza Berry (h16) from Alison Kingston (h5). The afternoon greensome over 12 holes was won by Sue Kerr and newcomer Diane Plommer with 26pts and club captain Kingston who teamed-up with Alison Letts for second place a point back.
