Boyne on target but wait for win goes on

Canterbury Men

-

Canterbury’s men remain pointless in the national Premier Division after a 5-2 defeat at Beeston on Sunday.

The game started slowly with both sides standing off and looking to counter-attack.

After chances at both ends Beeston won the first corner of the game on nine minutes and though Mark Gleghorne’s first flick was saved by Diccon Stubbings, Richard Lawrence was first to the loose ball to slot home the opening goal.

Canterbury were quick to respond with James Oates carrying the ball down the line before laying it off for Craig Boyne to volley home from five yards and make it 1-1 after 13 minutes.

The rest of the half saw both sides looking to counter-attack but three minutes before the break Beeston scored from another short corner through Gleghorne to go in 2-1 up at the break.

Just six minutes into the second half Canterbury conceded another short corner that was slotted into the top corner by Gleghorne.

Another Canterbury attack down the right saw skipper Boyne left unmarked on the right of the D to rocket the ball past the Beeston keeper to bring Canterbury back into the game.

But Gleghorne completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining to make it 4-2 and with four minutes left Ollie Willars netted a fifth after a broken down corner.

Holcombe visit Polo Farm on Saturday evening for the Kent derby (6pm).

Canterbury 2nds returned to winning ways in style with a 12-1 demolition of newly-promoted Richmond at Polo Farm in the London Premier Division.

The city club blazed into an early 3- 0 lead and never let up.

Billy Townsend netted a hattrick and though the visitors pulled one back it was 8-1 at half-time.

Sam Barrett went on to com- plete a treble of his own with Harry Roberts among the other scorers.

The Pilgrims earned a point from a 2-2 draw at Crowborough in South League Kent/sussex Regional 2 thanks to goals from Oli Kent and Thomas Degiovanni.

The 4ths romped to a 9- 4 success at home to Folkestone 2nds in South League Kent Area Division 1, having led 2-1 at the break.

The city side bounced back from defeat against a side who had won both previous games thanks to a hat-trick apiece for Spencer Smith and Ben Hare, two from George Pound and a Robert Preston single.

In the same division the pointless 3rds went down 2-1 at Ashford 2nds, despite having taken the lead through Jack Rolfe.

The Millers suffered a 5-2 reverse at Gore Court in Division 2, conceding all the goals in a short spell either side of halftime before late consolations from Hugo Creaney-birch and Barry Thomas.

The 5ths went down 4-1 at Ashford 4ths in Kent Open Premier B while the Griffins remain winless this season after being edged-out by the only goal at home to Cobdown in Open Premier C thanks to a second-half goal in a game in which the city club created a host of openings.

The Squires had to settle for a draw from a see-saw game at Marden Russets 3rds in Open Division 1.

The city side trailed 1- 0 at the break but Chris Goulden pounced on a slip to level and after his shot from a penalty corner was blocked, Pete Bowell tapped in the rebound with 10 minutes remaining.

The visitors were however reduced to 10 and the hosts made them pay with a late deflection past Ollie King.

The Friars lost 3- 0 at home to Old Bordenian 6ths in Open Division 3.

They fell behind inside five minutes and spurned a host of chances as they trailed 2- 0 at the break and then conceded again after the interval.
