TENNIS: BAY SHRUG OFF THE COLD AND WET TO TURN IN WINNING DISPLAYS

Herne Bay TC members have continued to play matches in the Kent League despite the weather turning colder and wetter. The ladies’ 3rds played their second match in Division 8 at home to Shooters Hill and won 3-1. Helen Lipyeat partnered Sheila Wyver, playing in her first weekend league match for the club, and they won both their rubbers, taking the first 6-1, 6- 0, before a 1- 6, 7-5 (10- 8) win against the first pair. Bay’s first pair Denise Parrett and Diana High beat the opposition’s second pair easily and went to a 10-point tie-break against the 1sts which they lost 10-7. Mixed 1 played Bromley Wendover at home in Division 1 and won 4- 0 with Peter Elsden/anne Gibbs and Graham Miles/louise Tucker only dropping 14 games across all four rubbers. It was their second win in the top division and secured their place in the section for next winter. The men’s 2 and 3 teams lost 3-1 against Knoll 3 at home and Trottiscli­ffe away respective­ly. Dan Walker/guy Farmer and Mark Townsend/bob Toye won the rubbers for the respective teams. The men’s vets team also lost 3-1 at home to Sevenoaks 1 in a tough Division 1 clash. Ian Cooke/graham Miles picked up the one rubber with a 14-12 win in the deciding 10-point tie-break. The men’s over- 60s team recorded their second win in Division 3 with a win on games at home to Blackheath. Ian Cooke/mark Townsend won both their rubbers in straight sets dropping just four games and Bob Toye/lionel Hoskins picked up 15 games in their two rubbers. The match was won by Bay, two rubbers all, four sets all and an impressive 39 games to 29. There were two matches in the Deal Indoor League. The mixed team had a 4- 0 win against Hythe 2 when one of the opposition’s men was unable to play because he had forgotten his tennis shoes. Graham and Danielle Miles and Nicola Mileham/ian Cooke beat the other Hythe pair 6-2, 6-2. The men’s 2 team played a Hythe 2nd team in Division 2 and the match ended in a draw on rubbers, sets and games. Gary Smith/jamie Medwin and Colin Thompson/steve Howard beat the Hythe second pair and lost to their first pair. The match ended up tied at 2 rubbers all, 4 sets all and 36 games all.
