Depleted City struggle to make mark

An understrength Canterbury City FC Disability endured a tough time at the latest round of the Kent Disability Football League tournament.

Teams faced a backlog of games after the postponement of the previous round and with two first team players missing, Canterbury promoted Kieron Edwards to the senior side and handed 2nd team debuts to Cameron Lemare and Joe Hunniset.

City went down 5-1 to Charlton Athletic in their opening game, paying the price for some slack defending before Edwards netted a consolation.

Game two was against Milton & Fulston Spiders with City improving vastly to secure a goalless draw with Chris Wright impressing in goal.

Their third game against Maidstone United Raiders was a close game with Raiders sneaking victory with a last-minute goal and City’s final two games were against Folkestone Invicta with City losing 1- 0 and 2- 0. With no substitutes available, Edwards played through the pain barrier after collecting an injury. City: Chris Wright, Chris Taylor, Liam Wickham. Conner Gilbert, Matt Roberts, Kieron Edwards.

The 2nd team enjoyed more success, overcoming Charlton 2- 0 in their opening game with Jason Linken breaking the deadlock after exchanging passes with Lemare.

City peppered the Athletic goal with shots and only the keeper kept them at bay until Lemare fired in a free-kick which went through the wall and beyond the keeper.

The next game was a hardfought stalemate against Bromley Green, with both keepers called on to ensure he deadlock remained unbroken.

City then faced Milton & Fulston in another exciting game.

City defender Paul Bowman was solid at the back but he could do nothing to prevent Fulston scoring the only goal on the break when he was left three on one.

Swanscombe Tigers were the final opposition in a double header.

Hunisett put in a good shift while City keeper Marc Bowmen pulled off several fine saves, while Matthew Briggs was thwarted by the Swanscombe keeper as both games ended goalless. City: Mark Bowman, Paul Bowman, Matthew Biggs, Jason Linken, Joe Hunisett, Cameron Lemare.

City are looking to strengthen their squads – email ccfcdisability@ btinternet.com for more information.
