Whiting catch earns Marsh top spot

Herne Bay Angling Associatio­n members competed for the Tamkin Shield on Sunday with limits set from Neptune Jetty through to the Rand, writes Barry Mount.

Fish were abundant along the whole stretch of the beach but the larger ones were caught at the eastern end and it was by ‘The Workings’ where Nick Marsh came out on top with 27 whiting, weighing 10.56lb.

Marsh was closely followed by Adam Purcell fishing at the Rand with 8.98lb and in third place by Les Bates with 7.73lb.

Darren Kennedy had the heaviest fish – a 0.775lb whiting. There were 238 fish weighed in, mainly consisting of whiting with a few good sized dabs.

The Tamkin Shield was the last competitio­n of nine in the championsh­ip year and saw Dave Andrews retain his overall title for the second year in succession with 800 points, 85 ahead of Darren Kennedy with Michael Chalk in third with 707.5 points.

Also on Sunday, Heron Angling Society members fished for the Charsley Cup, opposite their Red Shelter headquarte­rs.

More than a dozen anglers weighed in fish, topped by Tony Morris who caught seven whiting (3lb 2.2oz). Mick Morris was second with 2lb 15.2oz, while S Stephenson was third with three fish to 1lb 5.6oz.

The Herne Bay AA has two remaining competitio­ns this year, a Christmas Boat event on Sunday followed by the Brian Hackney Memorial Trophy – fished from Neptune Arm next Sunday (December 18) and open to all members and non-members.
