Defeats see Town slip down

Faversham lost further ground in Division 1 South, with a 2-1 defeat at East Grinstead on Tuesday night.

Malachi Robinson’s cross was turned in from close range by Tash Kwayie midway through the first half but it was Faversham who dictated the game either side of the break, although Wasps keeper Chris Haigh tipped a Josh Stanford shot onto the bar on 34 minutes and superbly denied Dean Grant four minutes before the break with the Town striker’s follow-up effort going over.

Haigh continued to prove equal to everything Town threw at him after the break and although Kwayie hit the post in a rare attack just after the hour, Grant rifled home to deservedly equalise soon after.

Town looked like they would go on to win and Haigh denied Grant twice in quick succession but the hosts snatched the winner against the run of play seven minutes from time when Kwayie produced a composed closerange finish after an effort from Jerson Dos Santos had been saved by Will Godmon.

The Lilywhites had been edged out 1-0 at leaders Tooting & Mitcham on Saturday. Town were left to rue missed chances in a first half which they bossed. Their inability to put away chances cost them points as a late defensive error was punished.

Jamie Maxted shot wide from an early George Monger free-kick, while Monger and Renford Tenyue combined to tee-up Grant whose shot was deflected over.

Ryan Cooper’s header from a Stanford corner thudded against the outside of the post, while Monger saw a strike from 20 yards held by keeper Matte Pierson, who also clawed away a curling Sam Bewick strike which was destined for the net before the break.

Another Stanford corner was headed wide by Town, while the hosts’ first shot came from Mike Dixon who dragged across goal.

A Bewick cross won a corner from which Bola Dawodu headed a good chance over, while Town scrambled a header off their own line.

Stanford was played behind the defence by Maxted but was crowded out and Grant was sent clear but fired the wrong side of the post.

Will Godmon claimed a Peter Wedgeworth drive at the second attempt as the Terrors began to press and he tipped over a Jordan Wilson shot before he was finally beaten on 77 minutes by a Chace O’neill shot from 18 yards after Town had failed to clear a free-kick.

Meanwhile, Herne Bay saw their Division 1 South game at home to Cray Wanderers abandoned due to thick fog after just 16 minutes on Tuesday night.

Danny Walder’s late penalty earned Bay a point in their Saturday lunchtime clash at home to Guernsey.

In a first-half short on quality, Jack Delo held a long-range effort from Liam Mahon, while Mark Lovell shot wide of Josh Addison’s goal.

Danny Williams and Michael Turner missed chances, while Delo kept Guernsey at bay by denying Jake Andrews three times.

Williams might have done better after being played through just before the break but he was thwarted by Addison and Bay were made to pay as Andrews put the Islanders ahead with a penalty three minutes into the second-half after the striker had been upended by Delo.

Bay controversially saw an equaliser from a Connor Sanders long throw ruled out as it was adjudged that nobody had touched the ball on its way into the net.

Bay began to press and Addison tipped Kenny Sanders’ effort over before they were handed a lifeline 17 minutes from time when Lovell was bundled over in the box amid a goalmouth scramble allowing Walder to fire home and ensure a share of the points.
