Kentish Gazette Canterbury & District
Are you brave enough to take on fiery fundraiser?
It wasn’t for the fainthearted but 80 brave volunteers took on last year’s firewalk in Canterbury in aid of the Pilgrims Hospice and raised £14,000.
Now the fiery challenge is back for 2017, and again the gauntlet has been thrown down by the charity for those courageous enough to take it on.
It takes place at the University of Kent on the evening of Friday March 3, when participants will face walking barefoot for about 20ft across red hot embers, sizzling at around 800c.
Pilgrims Hospice events fundraiser Robert Grew said: “If you can achieve this you can find the confidence to do anything. Not only will you conquer the most primal of fears, but you’ll raise vital funds for our hospices too.”
Last year 200 volunteers took part in three east Kent firewalks, raising enough to pay for 2,750 hours of hospice care. Among them was 29-yearold Aimee Babbs, who is an administrator at Pilgrims’ Ann Robertson Centre in Canterbury.
She has already signed up for the 2017 firewalk as part of a bucket list of things she wants to do before she is 30.
Also taking part last year was Gazette editor Leo Whitlock, who raised more than £200 for the charity.
Early registration costs £20 with a commitment to raise at least £100. See pilgrimshospices.org/firewalk. You could also raise money for the hospice by joining Kent’s biggest choir.
With 350 singers already pledged to get involved in the Make Your Voice Count event, organisers are closing in on their target of 500.
It takes part on Saturday January 28 at St Mildred’s Church in Tenterden at 7.30pm.
