County’s bid to retain trophy ended

Kent’s hold on the Liberty Trophy indoor title ended with a 109-84 quarter-final defeat against Devon on Saturday. Gordon Charlton’s rink had the best result with a 22-7 victory, Mark Johnson’s rink recorded another good win, while Roger Kendrick’s rink went down by one shot. Team manager Mick Collins said: “There were good performanc­es but others were mediocre and we have to look to rebuild next year.”

Oyster ladies won four rinks and drew two more to secure nine Kent League points from a 43-shot victory against visiting Gillingham side Prince Arthur. Oyster 132 Prince Arthur 89 Jeanette O’brien, Barbara Gordon, Dawn Harris, Madelene Mcconomy drew 18-18; Sylvia Sweeting, Barbara Jarrett, Karin Walker, Hilary Avis drew 17-17; Shirley Fey, Gloria Clark, Ros Cheeseman, Jacqueline Harvey won 31-14; Doreen Masters, Liz Long, Ruth Emert, Sue Swan won 27-10; Jan Allen, Margaret Morris, Eunice Holder, Sara Trotter won 23-15; Pauline Hogston, Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Alison Taylor won 16-15. On Saturday, several Oyster ladies helped Kent beat Sussex in the national Atherly competitio­n. Oyster ladies claimed a single point from their league game at Bromley after winning on just one rink and losing by 57 shots overall. Bromley 142 Oyster 85 Monika Thompson, Barbara Jarrett, Ruth Emert, Hilary Avis won 25-17; Maureen Aitken, Margaret Morris, Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Dawn Harris lost 26-11; Jeanette O’brien, Jean Bourner, Ros Cheeseman, Karin Walker lost 35-8; Jan Turner, Joy Burton, Sylvia Sweeting, Alison Taylor lost 23-12; Chris Appleton, Barbara Gordon, Carol Nelson, Pam Dennett lost 22-11; Diana Whybrow, Gloria Clark, Janet Whitbread, Jacqueline Harvey lost 19-18.

Chislet Cavalier Labradors continued their East Kent Short Mat Bowls Associatio­n campaign with a 37-30 home win over Bekesbourn­e Dodgers at Herne. Both teams won a match each but the Labradors picked up bonus points, plus a hotshot on both mats. Details J. Harlow (skip), B. Hill, J Bellingham won 22-12; J. Cramp (skip), M. Holmes, W. Laughton lost 18-15. The return match against Swalecliff­e Seagulls saw the mat honours shared but again the Cavaliers triumphed, 38-24, to earn four of the six points. Details J. Rains (skip), B. Hill, D. Cowley lost 17-15; J. Cramp (skip), M. Holmes, W. Laughton won 23-7.
