Wrong way to deal with Piers

-

It’s hard to say what the biggest story of the week is. Is it Donald Trump’s first week as president? Probably. Is it the Supreme Court’s Brexit ruling? Maybe. Is it the flop that is monotone marvel Gary Barlow’s musical talent show Let It Shine? Almost certainly not.

Regardless of what it actually is, for jowly pariah Piers Morgan, Ewan Mcgregor’s decision to boycott Good Morning Britain over comments the former made about the worldwide Women’s March should have occupied most front pages.

Piers was truly upset. He was upset on TV, he was upset in the papers and most of all he was upset on Twitter.

‘Evil Ewan is nasty to Poor Piers’ the papers declared, in Piers’ head.

That’s one way of looking at it and while poking fun at the perma-smug host is a fun pursuit, the right thing to do here is to side with him.

If you’re not familiar with the row, Piers said some people marching ostensibly for gender equality but also against Trump were ‘rabid feminists’, Ewan thought that was mean and as a result refused to join Piers on the sofa to talk about the sequel to Trainspotting.

Whoever you side with, Ewan’s wasn’t the right reaction but is a concerningly popular one, which ironically befits Trump himself.

While Trump refuses to take questions from news organisations he doesn’t like and has a press team which presents ‘alt-facts’ (a new word for lies) Ewan point-blank refuses to challenge a man he doesn’t agree with.

Both have the same end result.

A world where controversial views aren’t scrutinised and debated is a very dangerous place indeed.
