Don’t wait to have your say on latest street parking ban

Proposals could also affect surrounding areas ‘What we don’t know is whether they have the wider support of residents’

Plans for new yellow lines and pavement parking bans across Canterbury have been released this week.

A string of proposals - most suggested by residents - form part of new parking restrictions sent out for public consultation.

Each will be considered by councillors before being signed off in March.

But the authority is keen to hear the views of those likely to be affected by the changes, as most will likely be waved through in the face of no objections.

Among the proposals are pavement parking in bans in Priest Avenue, Suffolk Road, Mount Road, The Crescent and Moorfields, and New Street in Wincheap, while it is suggested to remove one in Highfield Close, Blean.

A new late-night taxi rank outside Steinbeck & Shaw in St George’s Place is also on the cards, with proposers saying it will stop revellers wandering into town to find a cab.

An under-used taxi rank in Rose Lane could also be changed into a disabled bay.

Cllr Ben Fitter-harding, who chairs the council’s regeneration and property committee, said: “Most of these proposals have been put forward by local people, but what we don’t know is whether they have the wider support of residents who live in the surrounding area.

“It can be the case that one possible solution to a problem can cause a knock-on effect further down the road or in another nearby street, which we will only uncover through the consultation process.

“Many streets in the district could therefore be affected by these proposals, so we’d urge people to have a look and let us know what they think.”

Any objections received will be reported to the joint transportation board on Tuesday, February 28.

The regeneration and property committee will then decide on Thursday, March 16, which of the proposals to implement. Both meetings are open to the public.
