Conditions conducive as captains drive-in

Golf round-up

Faversham Golf Club held their Captain’s Drive-in on Sunday with new incumbents Sue Henderson and Tom Owens hitting off the 14th tee.

In unseasonally pleasant conditions, the duo managed to hit their first drives reasonable distances watched by members from the clubhouse balcony taking advantage of the sunshine.

There followed a mixed social 13-hole foursomes event won by Chris Mears and Paul Smith with 29 points, one ahead of Jan and Rob Sayle with Chrissie Kemsley and Graham Durward-akhurst in third with 27 points.

Christine Bowles, Gillian Bailey and Maxine Field were the winners in a Ladies Fun Competition at Canterbury.

Teams of three turned out for the Piece of String competition.

All three scores counted and on each hole any single member of the team can move their ball the length of a 30cm piece of string.

On a day when many greens weren’t visible from the tees because of the fog, this could be of great help in getting out of a bunker or even dropping a ball into the hole! With a score of 113, Bowles, Bailey and Field won on countback from Val Binns, Cath Smith and Doreen Whiting with Andra Barney, Christine Burley and Diane Florence in third with 111.

Mike Barham held off new St Stephen’s Golf Society captain Steve Winder to win the latest match at Lydd.

The coastal course can be a brutal one and is always a challenge so with three members carding 30-plus points, it was going to be a close match.

Barham (h16) just took the first prize from 21-handicapper Winder on countback after both carded a 36 par for the course points.

Mike also took one of the nearest pins awards and 2s club.

Antony Back came in third with 32 playing off eight while the only other prize claimed at Lydd was the captains hole by John Mcneil.

Derrick Clark and Andrew Sait joined forces to win Chestfield Golf Club’s Daily Mail Foursomes on Sunday.

The pair carded 37 points, winning on countback from Steve Foster and Brian Emslie.

Third place went to Chris Mulvihill and Alan Hall a point back, beating Tom Johnston and David Moys into fourth place on countback.

Warren Bennett is having the pro shop refitted and it will be fully completed before the start of the main golfing season.
