New event multiples the fun
Golf round-up
The ladies at Canterbury Golf Club tackled a new format for their Wednesday fun competition – a multiplier. The cold weather definitely suited the winners, Val Binns and Kim Atkinson, who were 12 points clear of their nearest rivals, Di Plommer and Maxine Field. The competition was quite testing of friendships as one good score could be cancelled out by a partner’s failure to score on that hole. Many ladies hope that next time this type of competition is played it will be on a warm day when ground conditions won’t be so taxing. Result: 1 Val Binns (h11) and Kim Atkinson (h23), 65 pts; 2 Di Plommer (h26) and Maxine Field (h26), 53pts; 3 Cath Smith (h19) and Lizza Berry (h16), 40pts, on countback.
The team of Neil Hatton, Ian Hatton, Clive Parker and Darren Bovis, with a score of 125 points, were the winners of the Stableford competition, played at Chestfield Golf Club on Sunday. Runners-up were Roger Burton, Andy Bish, Jerry Bishop and Phil Davis, scoring 120 points and in third place, with 118 points, were Alex Young, Gary, Mark and Peter Kelk. Despite the rain from the day before, fears that the competition would have to be called off proved unfounded. The course coped well with the wet weather and was fully playable. In the ladies’ 12-hole Stableford last Thursday, the winner was Patsy Haynes with 20 points, winning on countback from Val Hales and Christine Dunlop.
