very conscious that it will have a big impact on all areas of the city.
The increase in traffic will be felt far and wide. The developers, in the outline application, only addressed the issue of how residents of the new development would be able to travel to the centre of Canterbury.
Their proposals to deal with this were inadequate and they proposed nothing to deal with the increase in through traffic and the probable knock-on effect on other areas.
People living in the new South Canterbury development won’t just want to get to the city centre. They will want to get to people and places in the north of the city. Many will want to access the high-speed train service from Canterbury West. Many will need to make journeys to other places further to the north – anywhere between Whitstable and Ramsgate.
All traffic to these destinations has to use the same small ring route round the centre of the city. These roads are already chock-a-block and this is likely to bring them to a standstill.
It will also lead to a further deterioration in air quality, with its effects on health.
We made these points to the planning committee. No one seems to be looking at the cumulative impact of the various different developments.
We have sought to draw attention to the likely impact of the new Kingsmead Riverside development, which includes housing and leisure facilities. Presumably residents in South Canterbury will want to access these.
Tackling these problems will require a deliverable strategy. It will need to involve developers, including Corinthian, along with CCC and KCC, and will need to include action to create cycle routes through the centre of the city, integrated public transport links, and a plan for a new eastern relief road.
If Corinthian really are concerned for the whole community, then we look forward to some genuine dialogue with them, however late in the day, on how they intend to contribute to this. Richard Norman St Michaels Place, Canterbury Secretary, North Canterbury Forum of Residents’ Associations
