-

He has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages and now legendary singer Sir Tom Jones is coming to Canterbury.

It is another coup for Kent County Cricket Club, whose Spitfire ground will host the open air concert on Saturday, July 8.

The popular veteran entertainer will be performing the night after pop star Olly Murs takes to the stage at the same venue.

The ground is also hosting an exciting triple bill of UB40, Level 42 and the Original Wailers on June 3.

Sir Tom, 76, has performed for more than 50 years, rubbed shoulders with Elvis, the Beatles and Frank Sinatra and sold more than a million records, with hits like Green, Green Grass of Home, Delilah and It’s Not Unusual.

He has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years as a judge on TV talent show The Voice.

He said: “I am really looking forward to coming to the lovely cathedral city of Canterbury.

“I love doing outdoor shows and being able to perform at the Spitfire Ground is fantastic.

“It promises to be a great night so I hope everyone comes out to enjoy this show in this beautiful venue.”

Chief executive of the cricket club Jamie Clifford said: “We are looking forward to his visit. Sir Tom is a renowned live performer.”

The cricket club has a growing reputation for bringing top acts to Canterbury and has previously attracted big audiences for Elton John, Simply Red and Bryan Adams. Tickets for Sir Tom’s show go on sale tomorrow (Friday) at 9am, priced at £35, £49.50, and £69.50 via www. ticketmaster.co.uk.
