Eagles Under-13s lost ground on title rivals Thanet Colts when they were held 2-2 at home by Hythe Stars and Stripes on Sunday. Eagles played with the wind at their backs in the first half but couldn’t make their chances count until Mehmet Rencber bundled his way into the box. When the ball spilled loose, Lewis Saunders was on hand to fire home from the edge of the box. Eagles continued to press forward and when Saunders picked up the ball wide on the right, he spotted the keeper off his line and from fully 30 yards, hit a shot that sailed into the net. The second half saw the Eagles side having to battle into the wind and for large periods they contained the Hythe attack with keeper Sam Millsted rarely troubled but when he failed to hold a free kick, it was a Hythe forward who reacted first a poked the ball home to reduce the deficit. It looked as though the Eagles would hold on but when a Hythe forward was not picked up at a corner, his header from 10 yards out found the net for a share of the spoils. Eagles’ man-of-the-match went to Elliot Hough for a fine defensive display.
