Riser cup final hopes dashed by old rivals

Sunday football

-

Rising Sun bowed out of the Kent Premier Cup on Sunday after a narrow defeat in their semi-final against old foes Quested – who beat them in last year’s final.

In a fiercely but fairly contested first half, Medway League side Quested came close to breaking the deadlock when a shot from inside the penalty area rattled the Riser bar.

At the other end, Riser came close to scoring on 35 minutes when Stacey Davis was presented with a half-chance in the six-yard area which was fired straight into the arms of the Quested keeper.

Both teams seemed happy to go into the break at 0- 0 but after half-time, Riser came out looking the more confident side and had a few early chances, the best falling to Danny Williams who fired wide with 20 minutes remaining following good work to get through the Quested defence.

With 12 minutes left and Riser continuing to push forward, a Quested break down the left resulted in a cross being met by James Mcdonald who headed home.

After the goal, Riser piled on the pressure and had several more half-chances including a cross which was headed onto the top of the bar but could not find a goal which would have taken the game into extra-time.

Riser manager Clive Stace – who saw his side claim a record 10th title out of 11 seasons last week – said: “It was no disgrace going out to the cup holders in what was the toughest and most evenly-matched game of the campaign.

“The Riser squad and coaching staff have performed brilliantly to again show that we are one of the top two Sunday league teams in Kent.

“We now turn our focus to the three remaining local league cups.”

Shaun Loomer hit a hat-trick as Littlebourne beat the Elephant 8- 6 in a Whitstable Charity Cup, Senior Section second round game.
