Bittersweet for Knight

-

Visually-impaired skier Millie Knight’s World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup campaign ended on a bittersweet note after a dramatic week in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The 18-year-old Canterbury star and guide Brett Wild claimed silver in the final downhill of the campaign to secure the Crystal Globe as World Cup champion in the downhill discipline. She also added to her medal haul by claiming silver in the super-g, again finishing behind Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova, a multi-world and Paralympic champion. The competition – organised to mark a year until the Winter Paralympic Games at the same resort – did, however, finish on a low with Knight being taken to hospital in an ambulance on Tuesday after crashing on the finishing line – just as she did at last month’s World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy. She said: “It was a tough day. I just have some minor scratches on my face and concussion but it was a devastating moment when the doctors said I would not be able to compete in the rest of the races but I am in the best possible hands and everyone is looking after me well.” She, however, added: “It’s not all bad news. We have had a successful time at the Paralympic test event. We have achieved what we came out here to do, it’s just a shame we had to cut it short. “We come away having won two silver medals and the overall Downhill World Cup Globe. “These weren’t the races that counted for us, we have one year to get fitter, stronger and faster, then we will show what we can do and make everyone proud.”
