GOLF ROUND-UP: WALLIS MISSES OUT ON CHAMPIONSH­IP TITLE AFTER PLAY-OFF

Canterbury GC profession­al Richard Wallis finished runner-up in the PGA Kent Closed Championsh­ip at Kings Hills GC on Monday.

Wallis lost in a play-off with Beted European Tour profession­al Matt Ford after both men had shot five-under-par 67s over the West Malling course. Wallis collected £400 for his efforts while Ford picked up the £500 first prize.

The prize for the leading amateur went to West Malling member George Young who used his local knowledge to finish tied fourth on three-under-par 69

The incoming Captains at Chestfield GC ‘Drove-in’ on Saturday in front of a large crowd of members and their families.

Peter Thomason, the new club captain who has taken over from Paul Robertson, welcomed everyone and revealed his chosen charity for the year will be Prostate Canceruk.

Other captains also driving in were Yvonne Bridge, the new lady captain, David Barnard, the Mitrebeens captain and junior captain Ben Robertson.

On Sunday, the Captain’s team challenged the Vice Captain’s team to the traditiona­l annual match, with the Captain coming out victorious by 17 matches to 8.

Louise Tucker led the way in Whitstable & Seasalter’s Ladies Section’s first medal of the year.

Tucker topped Division 1 with seven pars helping her to a net 71 to finish one ahead of Penny Perkins with Maz Garlinge another shot behind in third.

In Division 2. Judy Butcher was the winner with a net 78, helped by a par and a birdie two on the 15th. Inge Parry was second with a net 80 and Helen Foad third after a net 88. Foad and Garlinge also joined forces to win the Jubilee Foursomes with 31 points, two clear of Beryl Wingrove and Judy Butcher.

Tucker won the five-club competitio­n, carding 36 points to finish six clear of Garlinge in second with lady captain Maureen Davison in third on 29.

The yellow ball competitio­n saw three trios finish on 122 points.

Winners on countback were in-form Foad, Garlinge and Tucker with Davison, Stella Lakin and Vilma Parrett runners-up and Sheila Wyles, Mel Bashford and Sue Goodall in third.

Bashford and Tucker were drawn at home to Westgate in the first round of the National Daily Mail Foursomes competitio­n which involves over 1,200 clubs. The duo went ahead on the first hole and never looked back, going on to win 5&4 to progress to the last 625 where they will visit Sittingbou­rne.

In the first round of the Tappin Trophy, the club were drawn away at Wrotham Heath.

Three players form each team, one from each handicap division and play singles.

Tucker came back from three down after nine to triumph on the 20th hole.

Sue Pout got off to a good start and never let her opponent catch her, eventually winning on the 18th while Maureen Davison had another close game but played well to win on the 17th and see her side into round two.
