Bay suffer heavy defeat

Ryman League

-

Herne Bay suffered their second defeat in a week after being beaten 5-0 at home to Greenwich Borough on Saturday.

That followed on from a 2-1 reverse last Wednesday against Cray Wanderers despite Mark Lovell’s goal.

Greenwich, who boast ex-league players Charlie Macdonald and Bradley Pritchard in their ranks, were 3-0 up inside 15 minutes, following a double from Macdonald and a Mohamed Elsa strike to put the game beyond Bay early on.

The home side weathered the storm until half-time and were offered a glimmer of hope early in the second half, when Borough’s Harry Donovan was shown a straight red card.

However, Bay were unable to capitalise on having the extra man and ended up conceding two more goals – Macdonald completing his hat-trick and Peter Sweeney adding the fifth, compounding a miserable week for Sam Denly’s team.

Faversham Town’s play-off hopes are all-but finished after a goalless draw away at fellow contenders Lewes on Saturday.

Sam Bewick hit the post for Town late on but the visitors couldn’t find a winner despite having the better of the chances.

Lewes made the most of home advantage, creating opportunities that Town keeper Will Godmon was happy to see go past his post.

Josh Stanford had a bright first half and created chances for both Liam King and Bewick but they couldn’t convert. Lewes had the better of the early stages in the second half and Godmon had to be called upon when the ball was fired through a group of bodies.

Lewes keeper Chris Winterton made a fine double save to deny Stanford and Bewick before the latter was again denied, this time by the post, keeping the scores level at full-time.
